First there were five. Then there were two. And now, only one remains. Mrs. Obama recently told People Magazine that she thinks the new First Dog will be a rescued Portuguese Water Dog that is "old enough" and a "match" for the family dynamic. What, you may ask, is a Portuguese Water Dog? Wonder no more, PetMD has all you need to know about this curious breed.
The Portuguese Water Dog is a well-mannered, adventurous purebred dog that is widely accepted as an excellent family companion. Its single coat can be wavy but usually comes in carefully tended, black curly locks. The Water Dog sheds very little, perfect for Malia Obama, who suffers from dog allergies. Originally bred to be a helpmate to fishermen in Portugal, it is gregarious in nature, and behaves well with other canines, pets and children. The Water Dog is also extremely responsive to direction, making it a perfect companion for active people, or in this case, the First Family.
