Shubenacadie Sam and Wiarton Willie Predict Early Spring on Groundhog Day

Those fearing another long winter received pleasant news when Ontario's Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam -- our furry forecasters to the north -- both failed to see their shadows this Groundhog Day.

"Early spring it is!!!" exclaimed Wiarton Willie on his Twitter feed.

America's iconic groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, however, emerged from his burrow Thursday morning and predicted that spring is not quite close yet -- Phil had seen his shadow.

According to legend, if a groundhog sees its shadow after it emerges from its burrow on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter.
