Charges Laid in Sled-dog Slaughter

By AFP News    April 23, 2012 / (6) comments

VANCOUVER, Canada - Charges were laid on Friday in the grisly slaughter of dozens of huskies used by a tourism company during the 2011 Winter Olympics in Canada's westernmost province.

British Columbia prosecutors charged Robert Fawcett, manager of a sled-dog touring company in the ski resort of Whistler, with "causing unnecessary pain or suffering to a number of dogs."

The slaughter of more than 50 dogs, allegedly with a shotgun and a knife, sparked protests from around the world, an investigation by police and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and later prompted the province to introduce regulations to protect commercial sled dogs.

The dogs were reportedly killed as hundreds of other huskies looked on, injured dogs tried to escape, and one dog survived to crawl from a mass grave a day later.

The animals were no longer needed for sledding tours after the Olympics ended and business lagged at Outdoor Adventures Whistler and its subsidiary Howling Dogs, but executives with the private companies denied knowing the details of how they would be "culled."

The slaughter became public after the manager won a compensation award from the provincial WorkSafe agency for post-traumatic stress as a result of the killings.

Utterly disgusting to treat something that has poured it's heart out for you by working and obeying selflessly in such a horrific manner. Karma will come for you and when she does she will take the shape of what you fear most. I hope it's one of those beautiful huskies, and I hope she starts with your eyes.

I hope the judge throws the book as much as he can at the owner of the touring company that allowed and participated in this horrific act of unspeakable cruelty!
To willingly and willfully do what he did to those defenseless dogs is not only despicable, it is also unforgivable! If it pleases the Court I would like to offer my statement this man is worse than an animal he is a monster who needs to put away for as long as the law allows so he has time to think about what he has done in ending those dogs lives in the horrible manner in which he did it and should not be allowed around animals at all in the future!

how do people sleep at night that commit such horrific acts?? how how do our laws allow things like this to happen? hurting a amimal is just as bad as hurting a child, all day long!! the punishment for these crimes of hatred needs to fit the crime....lock the offender up for a at least 5 years with no chance of early parole!

I personally think that that all involved in this or knowledge of what was going to happen and did nothing to stop it, should suffer the same fate!!
