Pig Ears for Pet Treats Recalled Due to Possible Salmonella Risk

A potential salmonella contamination prompted Keys Manufacturing Company, Inc. to recall Pig Ears for Pet Treats on Tuesday. The recall resulted after a case of salmonella in a dog in was reported in Missouri. So far, one case has been reported.


Salmonella is a health concern for animals and people alike. Contact with tainted dry pet foods and/or treats can cause a person to become infected with salmonella, especially if hands were not thoroughly washed after handling the product. Healthy people who have possibly been exposed to salmonella-tainted food should watch for the following symptoms: abdominal cramping, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. More rare but serious salmonella poisoning manifests the following symptoms: urinary tract symptoms, muscle pain, eye irritation, and arthritis. If you experience any of these symptoms after handling Pig Ears for Pet Treats chews, contact a healthcare provider.

Pets with salmonella exhibit signs of lethargy, fever, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, or fever. Other pets will only exhibit a decreased appetite or abdominal pain. If your pet is infected but healthy, they can still act as carriers and infect other pets or people. Contact a veterinary provider if your pet has consumed this product.

Pig Ears for Pet Treats were distributed in: AR, FL, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MO, MN, OH, PA, TX, and VA. The chews were distributed via truck, in 100 count cases packed in cardboard boxes between:

· September 27 – October 6, 2010
· November 1 – November 29, 2010
· January 3 – January 25, 2011

The product’s UPC number is 61094 15000. The print on the side of the cardboard box reads:

· PET TREATS NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION and
· PET PRODUCTS 100 PCS. SMOKED AND 100 PCS REGULAR
