The Hartz Mountain Corporation has issued a voluntary recall of two of its dog treat products. This recall is due to trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue found in samples of the following products:
- Hartz Chicken Chews
- Hartz Oinkies Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken for dogs
According to a Hartz Mountain Corporation press release, Hartz testing found trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue in samples of Hartz Chicken Chews and Oinkies Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken products.
These antibiotics are approved for use in poultry in China and other countries, including European Union member states, but are not approved in the U.S.
The trace amounts of antibiotic residue do not pose a pet health or safety risk. These results are highly unlikely to be related to the reports of illnesses FDA has received related to jerky pet treats produced in China.
No other Hartz products are affected by this withdrawal.
