5 Irrefutable Reasons Why Dogs Love You

By PetMD Editorial on Mar. 10, 2010

Woof Wednesday

You love all dogs, and obviously, truly love your dog. But since dogs love you no matter what, what can you really do to deserve their love? Here are the top 5 reasons why dogs love you. And no, it’s not because you're so beautiful.

#5 Belly Scratches

After a hard day fighting battles with shoes, rugs, the postman, and protecting your home, there’s nothing a hard-working dog loves more than a good belly rub. Sure, “good boy!” has its merits, but there’s nothing like having your belly rubbed while scratching your back on the floor. All dogs return this with l-o-v-e.

#4 Treats! Treats! Treats!

Dogs are like humans, only smaller, four-legged versions of ourselves. And like us, dogs love having any and all treats thrown to them, whether it be a T-bone steak or a potato chip. But all snacks are not created equal. Healthy, delicious dog treats will quash his hunger pangs while still keeping him fit.

#3 Long Walks On The Beach

Okay, that’s kind of a lie. The way to a doggy heart is more like a plain, simple walk -- anywhere! They love to explore new and familiar smells, meet old friends, and make new ones. As long as you take your dog out on a walk, he’s gonna love you.

#2 You’re Like a Walking Theme Park

Every dog has his day, but he’d like all of them filled with playtime. Whether it’s fetch, Frisbee, a rousing game of "it’s mine," or whatever other form of entertainment, your dog will see it as quality together time that’s fun and energetic.

#1 'Cause You Keep it in the Family

We all know a dog will love someone for even the most Scrooge-ish scraps of love. But want real love from a dog (and by that we mean the love of a happy, social, friendly and well-adjusted dog?)? It’s easy. Make your dog a part of the family. Be loving, warm, train with positive reinforcement, and always provide a safe haven. Give him quality toys, food, and treats. Give him a warm bed and a healthy, happy life. Then, you will absolutely earn your dog's love.

It’s easy, and our doggy companions more than deserve it.

Woof! It’s Wednesday.
