Andy - ADOPTED

West Highland White Terrier Westie

An adotable dog in Wilmington, DE

  • Young
  • Small
  • Male

Andy is a purebred West Highland White Terrier from the country of Taiwan. He is about 3-3.5 years old and currently weighs 14.5 pounds (as of 9/2/2013).

Andy's rescued story

Two years ago in a burning summer it was 100 degree in Central Taiwan, Andy was spotted wandering on the streets by his rescuer while she was on the scooter waiting for the traffic light. He was matted and dirty and could not be identified what breed he was. Luckily, Andy was friendly to let the rescuer put him on scooter's foot panel and brought to the hospital for medical examination.

Soon after being rescued, one-year-old Andy was quickly adopted by a young single gentleman. The rescuer was happy for Andy and thought Andy already found his forever home. Two years later in this past June, one night the rescuer unexpectedly got a phone call from Andy's adopter who unfeelingly indicated that he must immediately return Andy to her because his future bride does not like dogs. The following morning after receiving the call, Andy was already in the rescuer's front door.

The rescuer was shocked and sad when she saw Andy the first time after two years. Andy was not as the happy dog as she recognized two years ago. He was underweight and his eyes were lack of light. It seemed that Andy was neither being well taken care of nor receiving enough attention he needed.

In order to well check if there were any skin infection or bite wounds under his hair, Andy was shaved and has been fostered by his rescuer since being returned.

Completed medical information

After a serious of medical exams including Distemper test, 4 Idexx (Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma Phagocytophilum), CBC blood work and Biochemistry blood work, Andy is negative from all of diseases; he is a healthy dog. But the rescuer still gave Andy a DNA test in August to ensure that he does not carry any diseases that are transmitted by fleas or ticks and hard to be detected by blood work.

In a routine X-rays check on Andy's hip joints and spine, it showed that they are in good condition; Andy does not have hip dysplasia. He also got his teeth cleaned recently.

Andy is neutered, de-wormed, up to date on all vaccinations including a rabies shot. He is heartworm negative and on preventative treatment and is micro chipped. All of his medical documents including X-rays films on his hips will be given to the adopter when he is adopted.

Andy's temperaments and personality

Under the rescuer's caring, Andy is back to his happy nature. He is a quite outgoing dog that is sociable and likes to go out to meet different people. He is passionate to everybody he meets and is not shy in a new environment. He is always happy, loving and sweet. Andy likes children and are not rough to them. He does not mind being bothered by the children but he does not actively look for kids to play. Many children like Andy and think Andy is like a big stuffed animal to them; it because Andy has great temperaments to the children.

Andy is calm to all kinds of noise including firecrackers and thunder. He LOVES to eat; his favorite word is "food." Andy is neither food nor toy aggressive or possessive toward people and children. His rescuer tests him often to try to get the food out of his mouth but Andy is not upset and only turns his head in other directions. Andy has not shown to like water but he was well-behaved while was given a bath.

Andy is fine with cats and totally ignores them when they are around. He also gets along well with dogs of all sizes but prefers to live with female dogs. He would compete for the rescuer's attention when male dogs around or bark at male dogs when they newly arrive in the rescuer's house; however, he does none of those above behavior toward female dogs. Andy does not like male dogs too much but he never shows any aggressive behavior towards them; he only barks to scare them or to show them that he is in a higher rank than they are in the house.

Andy is his rescuer's shadow; he follows her everywhere in the house. He does not like to be left alone in a room; he would bark to let you know. Andy needs dogs to stay with him when nobody is at home or people who can spend a lot of time with him every day. Even though Andy is small, he is not a laid-back dog; he likes to go out to experience different things surrounding him. He will be a great companion for a moderate active family with or without children and children who have experience in treating small breed dogs properly.

Andy is housetrained, good in car rides and walks very well on the leash. He has not shown to be interested in chewing furniture or other objects so far, but we cannot guarantee that he will not put his teeth on the furniture in his new home if he is not provided with toys and proper exercise.

Where is Andy right now?

Andy is currently living with his rescuer along with other several rescued dogs in Taiwan and is scheduled to come to the United States by October 6th. He will be staying with our foster family in North Wilmington, Delaware after his arrival. If you are seriously thinking of giving Andy a loving permanent home, please contact us to ask for an adoption application. Because we do not have a shelter and all of our rescued dogs are living with the foster family, we do not accept drop-by visits if you are interested in seeing our dogs. Before meeting our dog, the prospective adopter needs to fill out the application and gets approved.
