German Shepherd Dog
American Staffordshire Terrier, Mix

An adotable dog in Philadelphia, PA

  • Adult
  • Medium
  • Female

Valentine is a beautiful shepherd mix with a super soft coat, big brown eyes and a big smile that all beg for petting and affection! She has quite a story - she has already been rescued once in her life (as a tiny pup), and now needs help again. Val has always been extremely attached to the humans around her. However, as she came into adulthood she developed a mysterious aggression toward other animals. Her current owners have another dog and a cat, and have been forced, for everyone's safety, to relegate Valentine to a crate whenever she must be kept indoors. This is a challenging situation, and her owners want nothing more than for their beloved Valentine to have a better life, one that doesn't require her being crated so often. Their other challenge is that they are transitioning to a senior community/health facility in the next few months, and will be unable to take Valentine with them. Val needs a new home as soon as possible, and a great dog like her would be an enormously happy addition to the right home!

Obviously, Val needs to find a home with no other animals. We do not know how she would be with small children, but certainly imagine that a home with tweens or teens would be fine. With humans, she wants nothing but to give and receive love! She is a very high-energy dog, with an athletic build, so a large yard in which she could run safely would also be important (her current owners even have an obstacle course built for her!). Val is active, smart and knows some great tricks, like her adorable "Be a bear!" performance. We fell in love with Valentine as soon as we began caring for her- she will greet us shaking with excitement, and might jump a few times when we get her out to the yard; then she'll run around the yard in pure ecstasy and always return to us for kisses and belly rubs. Val *does* have
one doggie-friend with whom she's been able to maintain a safe,
super-playful relationship, so we know that she has it in her to be
non-aggressive, and could likely work with a trainer to "un-do" some of her behaviors.

Valentine is house-trained, crate-trained, trick-trained, and beautifully leash-trained. She has no health concerns, and is easily only middle-aged at this point. She has the energy of a two-year-old pup!
