Pet Apps: What Are Your Favorites?

May 02, 2012 / (7) comments

I finally joined the group of smart phone fans, and I have to admit, I’m not sure I could live without my 3G now! Nowadays, there are apps for everything out there. As for pet-friendly apps, I’m still discovering them…

That said, having written for my first ever animal app, I had to share it:

Pet Poison Helpline, an animal poison control based out of Minneapolis, just released a handy iPhone app called "Pet Poison Help," which contains an extensive database of foods, drugs, chemicals, and plants commonly found in the home and yard that are poisonous to pet poison helpline, dog poisoned, cat poisoned, pet poisoned, best pet appspets. This app provides information on over 250 poisons, each with a description, list of symptoms, and a full color photo. Just tap on the photo and it expands to full screen size for easy identification (especially important for all those plants, flowers, or venomous creatures!). Each toxin entry has a bright yellow banner across the top that indicates the potential severity of the toxin, from "mild to moderate" to "moderate to severe." This is obviously dose-dependent (as they say in the poison world, "It’s the dose that makes the poison!"), but helpful when you’re in a panic. When in the midst of a potential emergency, users can dial Pet Poison Helpline directly from the application on their phone.

The best thing about this app? It’s helpful when you’re out in the woods or at the cabin without 3G access (yes, it can happen!). If your dog happens to ingest something potentially poisonous, you’ll still have access to the information 24/7. Like many apps, once downloaded it’s always available, with or without Internet access or cell phone service. It may be the best $0.99 you can spend for your four-legged friend!

For you non-iPhone types with smart phones, be sure to add Pet Poison Helpline’s mobile app to your home screen for pet safety tips and information at your fingertips.

A  few other pet-friendly apps I like? PupTox, KitTox, and Iams VET 24/7. (Note: You can access these apps through the iTunes store.) That said, I’ll fully admit — I’m pretty cheap and don’t buy too many apps (so most of the apps I have are free!). So, help me out — what recommendations do you have for some great pet apps?

Best Pet App
by TheOldBroad on 05/02/2012 02:48am

Well, it's not an app, but the best pet-thing I have in my iPhone is the vet's phone number.

I too postponed getting an iPhone, but now wonder how I lived without it.

Hopefully some of the commenters will suggest some free* cat apps that would be useful or just plain fun.

*Yup, I set up an iTunes account without a credit card so I wouldn't be tempted to spend a dollar here and a dollar there and a couple of bucks somewhere....

app for android phone?
by lauracheng on 05/02/2012 09:51am

Is the app available for an android phone? I currently have Pet Saver program on my HTC. It is a great program for pet emergency (cpr, first aid). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.pettech.petsaver&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm5ldC5wZXR0ZWNoLnBldHNhdmVyIl0.

GPS Tracking
by Lauren Wojcik on 05/02/2012 10:36am

Hi PetMD! My favorite App is Pet Check Technology, a GPS Tracking APP I use so that clients can see when I get to their apartments, where I walk their dogs, and when their dogs are returned safely home... in real time! It's pretty amazing.

Great idea for an app
by Joysworld on 05/02/2012 01:29pm

I just checked out you site, and it was very interesting, and a great idea. Luckily I have never had a dog or animal that was poisoned, but you just never know. Thanks again for a great app. If you have a chance check out my new website http://www.joyfulanimalrescue.com I have been doing some research about the chews from China.

Pet Master for Android
by Tiskers on 05/02/2012 05:34pm

PET MASTER. Not sure if this app is available for Apple products, but it's in the Android marketplace. There's a free edition and a $4.99 "Pro" edition. I have the free one and have found that it more than meets my needs.

It's an app for logging important things about your pets: weight, health issues, vet appts., medications, vaccinations, and much more. You can upload a photo for each pet, and note important or significant info specific to each one.

It's like carrying a file folder around with you on each furball!

Great one stop app!
by Michael Curran on 06/09/2012 06:10am

The best app I have found which has stayed on my iphone through multiple versions, system installs, and phones has been Pet First Aid: for Your Dog, Cat, Puppy, or Kitten by Jive media. Normally this is the first app I install whenever I refresh my phone. This app includes the typical first aid guide that is well done and illustrated but the app includes so much more. It allows you to store a pet profiles with basic information like name, age, photo, medical and diet history, along with multiple vet contacts. Each profile also has a weight tracker that will help shave the pounds off of chubs or can help maintain weight on animals that might have joint problems or disabilities like my little girl. My favorite feature and what I believe is the most useful feature, this app also lets you journal which I find valuable for both medical records and training records. I suggest that all of my clients who are going through my behavior modification program keep track of the bad and good on a daily basis. While the journal can track any behavior that we are trying to reinforce or get rid of, my favorite use is with aggressive and reactive dogs. Owners with reactive dogs find it valuable to count the number of times their dogs react on a walk, paired with the duration and intensity of each encounter, over time this tells us if the program is working or if we need to make changes.
