Debunking Common Cat Myths

PrintPrint

April 02, 2012 / (8) comments

With cats being the mysterious creatures they are, a number of myths have sprung up around them. Many of these myths are far from being true and some even border on being ridiculous; but they persist, nevertheless.

Cats always land on their feet when they fall.

This is false. Though cats are fairly graceful creatures, they do not always land on their feet. Your cat can be injured in a fall much like any other animal. Even if your cat does land on his feet, if the fall is from a sufficient height, injuries can still occur. In fact, veterinarians have a name for these types of injuries. They refer to them as "high rise syndrome."

Cats are solitary creatures that prefer to be left alone.

Though each cat has his own personality, as a species cats are social creatures. Most cats enjoy interaction with their people. My cats actually come looking for me and each has his own little tricks to get my attention. They also respond to my voice (most of the time!).

All cats hate dogs.

Many cats live peacefully and harmoniously in the same household with a dog. In fact, some cats will actually curl up to sleep with the dog. Obviously, there are some cats that do not like dogs. Others simply tolerate their presence. However, in most cases, if a cat is acclimated to the dog correctly and given time to adjust to the new situation, the cat will come to accept the dog as part of the household.

All cats hate water.

Believe it or not, some cats actually like water, and some even enjoy swimming. Two of my own cats like to play in water. I have to keep the toilet lid down in my home to keep the floor in the bathroom dry. If I forget, water is splashed from one end of the bathroom to the other as they play.

Cats do not need veterinary care.

This is absolutely not true. Cats need regular veterinary care just like dogs. Currently, the number of cats kept as pets is much higher than the number of dogs. However, the number of feline veterinary visits is much lower than that for dogs. There are apparently many reasons for this. Some cat owners simply don’t realize their cats need care. For others, getting the cat to the veterinarian is difficult, prompting the cat owner to either delay or forego necessary veterinary visits.

Cats have nine lives.

Needless to say, cats live only one life.

A cat can suck the breath from a baby.

Cats do not have any mystical ability to injure a child. However, it is never a good practice to leave any pet alone unsupervised with a baby.

Fun/Informative :)
by Dog_Horse_lover on 04/02/2012 03:31am

Having 2 cats myself, I've pretty much debunked these myths myself a long time ago, though this article was fun/informative to read, nonetheless :)
I've known for a long time cats can be injured/not always land on their feet from jumping/falling; I mean, it makes sense to assume the higher the fall/jump, the more likely they are to hurt themselves. Even if a cat does not land on its feet, I mean you're still talking about stress on the animal's joints and bones from the force of their weight and the impact from landing on hard surfaces!
As for cats being solitary, well, my older cat was used to being the only cat in our household until we brought in our kitten; he didn't like the change much and he may not always like to be around our 1-year-old "kitten", but he tolerates her now and I think he(secretly) appreciates her company.
Cats hating dogs? HA!! My 12-year-old golden retriever and 11/12-year-old cat have been together most of their lives and stick together like glue! My cat never stays out in the backyard for too long if our dog is still in the house; he'll follow our dog outside and lay out with her in the backyard for however long she stays outside (which usually isn't more than an hour). Heck, I can walk into a room and find them sleeping just barely an inch away from each other, butt-to-butt, or back-to-back! xD
Cats have nine lives... How many times have I heard that phrase in my young lifetime? I sure as heck ain't gonna take the risk with my kitties to prove/disprove this myth!!

Persistence
by TheOldBroad on 04/02/2012 07:26am

Many cat myths are oddly persistent. Humans, for some reason, believe many things that they've "just heard" as opposed to thinking things through rationally to see if the myth makes sense.

My Thundering Herd races to greet me when I come home after work. Was it I that was missed or the possibility of a treat?) However, they jockey for lap position when I find time to sit and watch TV. There's also intense jockeying for preferred spots at bedtime.

I'm sorry,
by Cara Koehler on 04/02/2012 10:37am

When I was five I woke up to my favorite cat's face in my face with her legs pinning me down around the neck. I still LOVE cats, I am not afraid of them but she scared the ever living out of me and she hissed and tightened when I tried to move.

Cats and water

There is a breed of cats called the Turkish Van that likes water. They are also known as the swimming cat.

Cats have only one life

Cats may have only one life, but according to some we have rescued and traced back with tattoos, etc., they can definitely have several very separate chapters.

kitty swimming
by Annette Lynn Spence on 04/02/2012 01:56pm

am afraid I debunked THAT myth when I was four. I raced our two kittens across the swimming pool. Rightly, the parents banned me from kitties for a month. And explained drowning AND that it is torture not fun if it is an animal who doesn't understand. My cat Nicky is 20+lbs. He would probably beat me up if I tried it with him.....

by Judy Petfitnation on 04/06/2012 10:33am

Hi Annette,
Because of what I do, I couldn't help but notice the 20+ pound cat that you mentioned. Cat obesity is a very dangerous thing and exposes our furry felines to a variety of avoidable illnesses if their weight is maintained. Just saying, in case you weren't aware of this :)

Not Solitary
by Judy Petfitnation on 04/06/2012 10:29am

My two cats are totally not solitary creatures. You get out of them what you put in and I am so proud of my two cats and their social skills. There is constant cat interaction in our home and they love it :) !!!
