Moving Forward

This will be my last blog for Purely Puppy. I am moving on from here to a guest spot every other Friday on Fully Vetted. My draw to this blog was to spread the good word of behavioral medicine. To stand at the pulpit each week and preach that you don’t have to dominate your dog to get him to respect... READ MORE

No, It is Not Your Fault

This week, I saw a post on Facebook that bugged me. The person posted, "Train the owner, not the dog." This is a commonly used phrase in dog training circles. While I agree that this can be the case with dogs who are unruly — that the owner is a lot of the problem — it most often... READ MORE

Preventing Worms by 'Leaving It'

This week, as we focus on preparing for Spring and prevention of parasites, we are running one of our favorite Dr. Radosta columns on the topic of  worms. It was originally posted in December of 2011 under the title "Ewww ... Worms, Part 2." Dr. Radosta will return next week with an... READ MORE

You Get More Flies, and Dogs, with Honey

“You can’t run these trails!” yelled an older man as I ran by him on Sunday morning. I was running the same trail that I run every Sunday morning. On this particular Sunday morning, a small bike race was taking place on the trail. Surprised by the man’s outburst, I stopped... READ MORE

When Should You Return Your Puppy to the Breeder?

Peyton is a six month old, blond Cocker Spaniel who came to see me for growling at the children in his family. He had snapped at them, but so far had not bitten. In the exam room, he was exuberant and friendly with adults, but I could tell that the children made him uncomfortable because when they... READ MORE

Emotion vs. Intellect in the Fearful Dog

This weekend I ran my first ½ marathon trail run. It was 14.25 miles, to be exact. My husband had coached me and I was confident about my ability to finish. I was prepared and didn’t at all feel nervous, but my body disagreed. My stomach was all a-flutter and, well, let’s just say... READ MORE

No, Your Dog Does Not Have to Be Social

We went to see Totem, the latest Cirque Du Soleil masterpiece, the other day. We arrived a bit early, so there were empty seats around us. When the couple who was sitting next to us arrived and the gentleman sat down, he was just too close for comfort. If I sat normally in my chair, his entire arm was... READ MORE

Why You Must, MUST Get Your Pup Microchipped!

The other day, I was chatting with one of my clients who is involved with the Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. She recounted an amazing story of Black Jack, a German Shepherd Dog who was stolen from his owner, used as bait for a fighting dog ring and then miraculously found by a person... READ MORE

Curing Fear with Treats and Love

Last week, a reader posed the question, how can you help a puppy “that has had a traumatic experience during a fear imprint stage?” It will depend on the puppy’s genetic predispositions and how traumatic the event was from the puppy’s perspective. My impression from my clinical... READ MORE

The "Why" of Fear Related Aggression, Part 2

Earlier today, I was sitting with the cutest, 1-year-old Maltese named Baby. Her owner had brought her to see me because she bites strangers. She was hovering under her owner’s legs with her tail tucked, and panting as if she had run a marathon even though it was perfectly cool in the exam room. The... READ MORE

ABOUT PURELY PUPPY

LISA RADOSTA, DVM, DACVB

Photo of Lisa Radosta

…is a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Haven’t ever heard of one? You’re in good company, because many people don’t know they exist. After all, there are only 54 of them. After veterinary school at the University of Florida and some time in primary care practice, Dr. Radosta completed a 3-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She treats dogs, cats and birds with serious behavior problems, like aggression, separation anxiety, elimination outside of the litter box, and storm phobia. But please don’t ask her if dogs lie on a couch and bark at her!

She spends her off time writing textbook chapters and articles for veterinarians and clients, as well as lecturing nationally and internationally. Oh, yeah - she is also an overscheduled, stressed, tired, working mom. If you are itching to know lots more about her, go to her website at www.flvetbehavior.com, and join her weekly for your puppy fix.
