Why You Must, MUST Get Your Pup Microchipped!

The other day, I was chatting with one of my clients who is involved with the Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. She recounted an amazing story of Black Jack, a German Shepherd Dog who was stolen from his owner, used as bait for a fighting dog ring and then miraculously found by a person... READ MORE

Curing Fear with Treats and Love

Last week, a reader posed the question, how can you help a puppy “that has had a traumatic experience during a fear imprint stage?” It will depend on the puppy’s genetic predispositions and how traumatic the event was from the puppy’s perspective. My impression from my clinical... READ MORE

The "Why" of Fear Related Aggression, Part 2

Earlier today, I was sitting with the cutest, 1-year-old Maltese named Baby. Her owner had brought her to see me because she bites strangers. She was hovering under her owner’s legs with her tail tucked, and panting as if she had run a marathon even though it was perfectly cool in the exam room. The... READ MORE

The "Why" of Fear Related Aggression

One of the most common questions I am asked in my clinic is, "Why does my dog act like this?" In all aspects of our lives we get very caught up in the "why?" If we can figure out why something happened, maybe we can figure out how to fix it. Possibly, we can make sure we do not... READ MORE

What Happens After Socialization?

"I really like your blog, but I have one complaint." This was my friend and colleague Debbie, who generally says exactly what's on her mind. Her point was that although I talk a lot about socialization in this blog, I don't talk near enough about what happens after the socialization period. Her... READ MORE

Socialization Again?!

"This one is really cute." That is my nurse describing the patient that she just put into the exam room for me. When I enter the room, I am greeted immediately by a friendly but cautious 9-month-old Brittney Spaniel. He is very, very cute.   READ MORE

Jack, Part 3: See Jack Learn

If you have been following this blog for the past two weeks, you know Jack, the black lab puppy who is owned by a retired couple. Jack is a trouble-maker for sure, but his behavior is still within normal limits for a puppy of his breed and age. This week, we are exploring the final part of the plan-teaching:... READ MORE

Jack, Part 2: See Jack Sit and Sit and Sit!

If you read the blog from last week, you know about Jack. This week, we are going to visit the second part of the treatment plan for our normal but overly rambunctious puppy. This week we are covering structure and boundaries.   READ MORE

Environmental Enrichment for Puppies and Dogs

Jack is a 1-year-old Labrador retriever. He is shiny, black, and full of energy. He is bouncing around my exam room wagging his entire body and soliciting attention from everyone. Each toy that I pull out is immediately picked up by Jack. He throws it up in the air and pounces on it as it falls to the... READ MORE

The House-training Glitch that Needs to be Fixed

This week we are running one of our favorite Dr. Radosta columns on the topic of fixing a house-training program that has gone awry. It was originally posted in November of 2012 under the title "Why Do So Many Dogs End Up on Death Row for Peeing in the House?" Dr. Radosta will return next... READ MORE

ABOUT PURELY PUPPY

LISA RADOSTA, DVM, DACVB

Photo of Lisa Radosta

…is a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Haven’t ever heard of one? You’re in good company, because many people don’t know they exist. After all, there are only 54 of them. After veterinary school at the University of Florida and some time in primary care practice, Dr. Radosta completed a 3-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She treats dogs, cats and birds with serious behavior problems, like aggression, separation anxiety, elimination outside of the litter box, and storm phobia. But please don’t ask her if dogs lie on a couch and bark at her!

She spends her off time writing textbook chapters and articles for veterinarians and clients, as well as lecturing nationally and internationally. Oh, yeah - she is also an overscheduled, stressed, tired, working mom. If you are itching to know lots more about her, go to her website at www.flvetbehavior.com, and join her weekly for your puppy fix.
