Perfect Dog Syndrome

Not that long ago, I was sitting in my exam room with a lovely family who brought their young, male Doberman Pinscher named Tiny to me for jumping up and biting. The first part of my appointments is geared toward gathering the history so that I have an accurate picture of what is going on with the pet,... READ MORE

Feeling the Wind in Your Face is Not Safe!

I was running along a very busy six-lane road the other day when I saw a car drive by with a dog in the front seat, his head sticking out of the window. Honestly, when I see this type of thing it makes me angry.   READ MORE

Mine! What to do When Your Pup Doesn’t Like to Share

My friend Sue just adopted a 10-month-old, mixed breed dog from the local shelter. She named her Julep. Her head is wide and she’s short and stocky, but her fur is wiry and sticks up all over the place. She’s a nice, cute, friendly dog.   READ MORE

Your Puppy Has Hip Dysplasia; Now What?

When my dog Sweetie — whose silhouette is on my logo and whose picture is on my website — was 5 ½ months old, she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. This is a very painful, inherited disease that eventually results in osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs. Large breed dogs are generally affected,... READ MORE

Puppy Vaccinations: A Controversial Issue

Last week’s blog post topic was the vaccination series for puppies. One reader had questions about vaccines and titers given after the puppy series is complete. This is such an interesting and controversial topic that I thought we should devote an entire blog to it, and hopefully answer the reader’s... READ MORE

Puppy Vaccinations

There is a lot of controversy nowadays about vaccinations. Which vaccinations should your puppy get? How often does your puppy need to be vaccinated? Do you really have to go back every three weeks for another vaccine? How important is all this anyway?   READ MORE

Ouch! Puppy Biting Hurts!

When I was in veterinary school, a good friend of mine got a new Ibizan Hound puppy that she named Noah. I remember some days when she would just sit down and cry because he was so unruly.   READ MORE

Mounting: An Embarrassing Problem

It’s a beautiful evening at your house. You’re having a lovely barbecue in the cool spring air, your dog is happily visiting with your guests, but there is one guest in particular who has become the recipient of your adolescent pup’s love — as is evidenced by the fact that he... READ MORE

How to Stop Your Dog From Jumping

I don’t like it when dogs jump on me. I can’t tell you why it bothers me so much, it just does. Interestingly, nuisance jumping is a common complaint from owners as well.   READ MORE

ABOUT PURELY PUPPY

LISA RADOSTA, DVM, DACVB

Photo of Lisa Radosta

…is a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Haven’t ever heard of one? You’re in good company, because many people don’t know they exist. After all, there are only 54 of them. After veterinary school at the University of Florida and some time in primary care practice, Dr. Radosta completed a 3-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She treats dogs, cats and birds with serious behavior problems, like aggression, separation anxiety, elimination outside of the litter box, and storm phobia. But please don’t ask her if dogs lie on a couch and bark at her!

She spends her off time writing textbook chapters and articles for veterinarians and clients, as well as lecturing nationally and internationally. Oh, yeah - she is also an overscheduled, stressed, tired, working mom. If you are itching to know lots more about her, go to her website at www.flvetbehavior.com, and join her weekly for your puppy fix.
