Puppy vs. Cat

Ted, my black cat, has taught two Rotties, my Mom’s two Dobes, my sister-in-law’s Min Pin, a Beagle and countless rescue dogs the ropes. He doesn’t really like dogs, but he always managed to find a way to get along with them peacefully.   READ MORE

What to do When Your Puppy Pees on Your Shoes

I got a call the other day from a friend who was calling on behalf of his friend. He wanted to know what to tell his friend whose puppy urinates (or pees) every time someone reaches to pet her.    READ MORE

No More Retractable Leashes!

Where I live, I see a lot of dogs on retractable leashes. They are generally wandering pretty far from their owners, investigating something in the grass, or interacting with someone. While these types of leashes may be appropriate for some older adult dogs, they are never appropriate for puppies. There... READ MORE

People Don’t Listen!

Some time ago, I got into an argument with a stranger at an outdoor shopping mall. I don’t know if I was actually yelling, but let’s just say that she could hear me from about 30 feet away. While I am a spirited person, I try to stay under control, especially when in public. BUT, on this... READ MORE

Dogs Don’t Fly!

Some time ago, I was at a client’s home for the first time. Simon, her dog, was a cute Havanese who had been shaved recently, so he looked even smaller than usual. READ MORE

Everyone Needs Their Own Space

At least once a day at work I encounter a patient who needs to, but can’t be confined away from its owner. READ MORE

Your Dog’s Paycheck

The other day, I saw a lovely family; mom, dad, two kids, and two Shiba Inus — Minnie and Mickey. The Shiba Inu is an ancient hunting breed well-known for its independent behavior. Minnie has Storm Phobia. Mickey is a friendly guy who just doesn’t listen very well. He gets bored and destroys... READ MORE

Understanding Your Pup’s First Surgery

Your pup’s first surgery will probably be a spay or neuter. Often, when owners are shown an estimate for a spay or neuter they are given the option to opt out of certain procedures commonly recommended during or before surgery. Most pets don’t have pet insurance, but when they do, there are... READ MORE

Your Rottweiler puppy is the love of your life. She is cute, sweet, good looking and intelligent. You’ve been thinking that you might want to breed her when she gets a little older. After all, she is a wonderful dog.   READ MORE

Perfect Dog Syndrome

Not that long ago, I was sitting in my exam room with a lovely family who brought their young, male Doberman Pinscher named Tiny to me for jumping up and biting. The first part of my appointments is geared toward gathering the history so that I have an accurate picture of what is going on with the pet,... READ MORE

ABOUT PURELY PUPPY

LISA RADOSTA, DVM, DACVB

Photo of Lisa Radosta

…is a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Haven’t ever heard of one? You’re in good company, because many people don’t know they exist. After all, there are only 54 of them. After veterinary school at the University of Florida and some time in primary care practice, Dr. Radosta completed a 3-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She treats dogs, cats and birds with serious behavior problems, like aggression, separation anxiety, elimination outside of the litter box, and storm phobia. But please don’t ask her if dogs lie on a couch and bark at her!

She spends her off time writing textbook chapters and articles for veterinarians and clients, as well as lecturing nationally and internationally. Oh, yeah - she is also an overscheduled, stressed, tired, working mom. If you are itching to know lots more about her, go to her website at www.flvetbehavior.com, and join her weekly for your puppy fix.
