Why Does My Puppy Need So Many Shots?

Human babies get a lot of shots, when they belong to parents who are OK with them getting shots. It’s a controversial issue for both humans and pets. You have to do what feels right to you based on the information you have at hand. For the record, my kids are vaccinated.   READ MORE

A Few Texas Fourth of July Hazards for Your Puppy (That Could Apply Elsewhere, Too)

So I did a quick Google search to see what the major hazards for dogs were during this time — it was mostly a laundry list of fireworks related info. For that I'll refer you to Dr. Kuhly's spectacular article about how you and your pets can deal with fireworks on this, the anniversary of our Independence... READ MORE

Traveling With Your Puppy

Summer is here, and so our thoughts inevitably turn to travel to places far and away — places different from where we live. We head to the beach, the mountains, or maybe just a theme park or other tourist destination of our dreams.   READ MORE

Top 13 Questions to Ask a Doggie Day Care Facility

My friend Jason Mayfield owns a pet boarding facility in the Houston area called the Bed Bath and Biscuit. He also trains dogs, zebras and apparently a slew of other exotic animals. Oh, and he founded the Southeast Texas Bear Refuge to provide a safe place for orphaned or abandoned bears, too.   READ MORE

How Much Exercise is Too Much for My Puppy?

I actually get variations of this question a lot (it was even the first question I got on Purely Puppy). When can I jog with my puppy?  How far can my puppy walk/jog?  When can I start agility training for my puppy? READ MORE

Why Does My Puppy Itch?

So my editor boss-guy gave me a list of topic suggestions when we first planned out Purely Puppy. One of the topics was "diseases and conditions that affect puppies in their first year." Well, since that’s a little broad, we'll talk about something that I get asked just about every time... READ MORE

When Should You Take Your New Puppy to the Vet?

The short answer: Have the pup meet the vet within the first week of bringing him or her home. This is, at least, my humble veterinary opinion.   READ MORE

ABOUT PURELY PUPPY

LISA RADOSTA, DVM, DACVB

Photo of Lisa Radosta

…is a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Haven’t ever heard of one? You’re in good company, because many people don’t know they exist. After all, there are only 54 of them. After veterinary school at the University of Florida and some time in primary care practice, Dr. Radosta completed a 3-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She treats dogs, cats and birds with serious behavior problems, like aggression, separation anxiety, elimination outside of the litter box, and storm phobia. But please don’t ask her if dogs lie on a couch and bark at her!

She spends her off time writing textbook chapters and articles for veterinarians and clients, as well as lecturing nationally and internationally. Oh, yeah - she is also an overscheduled, stressed, tired, working mom. If you are itching to know lots more about her, go to her website at www.flvetbehavior.com, and join her weekly for your puppy fix.
