Ewww ... Worms, Part 2

What has six razor sharp teeth and sucks your pup’s blood? No, it is not a Halloween nightmare! It is a hookworm. We are continuing to talk about pesky intestinal worms (see last week’s blog about roundworms). This week we are going to finish up with hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and an... READ MORE

Ewww ... Worms

Is there anything grosser than worms? Even as a veterinarian they disgust me. At one time or another, your dog will get some type of intestinal parasite. For puppy owners, intestinal worms are a real concern. Infections that would be unlikely to make an adult dog sick can kill a puppy.   READ MORE

Special Needs for Brachycephalic Breeds

The dermatologist came to find me the other day for a consult on one of her patients. George is an 8-month-old, male English Bulldog. He had been diagnosed with yeast intertrigo (skin fold dermatitis).   READ MORE

Is Your Pup Prepared for Her Genetic Destiny?

Your puppy is genetically predisposed to certain medical diseases. If you have a purebred puppy, you have an advantage, because you know the most common diseases to afflict your breed. If you don’t know which diseases to watch for, you can find out by going to your national breed club’s website,... READ MORE

Why Do So Many Dogs End Up on Death Row for Peeing in the House?

I am sitting at a coffee shop talking to a nice young couple with a 2-year-old male Maltese named Steve. He has the whitest coat and the blackest nose. He is good looking, for sure. From the very beginning, he is my best friend — wagging his tail and jumping on me. The owners got him from a really... READ MORE

How to Find the Right Trainer for Your Pup

Lately, I have been searching for a new school for my daughter. I am one of those moms who is not afraid to flag down complete strangers with children in the grocery line, restaurants and hair salons to ask them about local schools. Despite the vastness of the Internet, the best way to find a great product... READ MORE

The Magic Pill for Puppies

Imagine: You are standing in the veterinarian’s office with your pup. The doctor tells you that there is a new medication that prevents the leading cause of death in dogs. You have to give it once a day for eight weeks, it doesn’t have any negative side effects, it is free, and it is proven... READ MORE

Are You a Driver or a Passenger?

While sitting in the waiting room at the pediatrician’s office the other day, I watched two mothers interacting with their middle school aged daughters. The first mother came in with a roller bag and set up shop as soon as she had checked in. She pulled out her daughter’s homework, set her... READ MORE

Deciphering the Breed Code

Which puppy to choose? If you have been following this blog, you are aware that we are adding a new dog to our household, and for the first time in 23 years it will not be a Rottweiler. (We will be getting a Rottie in a couple of years though — we are addicted!) As I have been speaking to breeders... READ MORE

Are You and Your Puppy Mismatched?

A nice man who looks to be in his early 70s sits in my office with Midge, his young, black and white Border Collie, whom he received as a birthday gift from his daughter.   READ MORE

ABOUT PURELY PUPPY

LISA RADOSTA, DVM, DACVB

Photo of Lisa Radosta

…is a board certified veterinary behaviorist. Haven’t ever heard of one? You’re in good company, because many people don’t know they exist. After all, there are only 54 of them. After veterinary school at the University of Florida and some time in primary care practice, Dr. Radosta completed a 3-year residency in behavioral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She treats dogs, cats and birds with serious behavior problems, like aggression, separation anxiety, elimination outside of the litter box, and storm phobia. But please don’t ask her if dogs lie on a couch and bark at her!

She spends her off time writing textbook chapters and articles for veterinarians and clients, as well as lecturing nationally and internationally. Oh, yeah - she is also an overscheduled, stressed, tired, working mom. If you are itching to know lots more about her, go to her website at www.flvetbehavior.com, and join her weekly for your puppy fix.
