Tales of Love for Valentine's Day

February 14, 2013 / (5) comments

It’s Valentine’s Day, so how about some tales of love … from the animal world.

I’m not talking about owners who love their pets; that’s almost a given (or should be). I want to hear about animals that obviously love each other. I’ll start us off with a tale from my own household.

My cat Victoria has not lived the easiest of lives. She was a feral "teen-age" mom on the streets of Washington D.C. When I adopted her, she was terrified of everything and didn’t leave the closet she sought shelter in for six months. Eventually, she began to venture out but was still timid. She continued to get braver as the years passed, until Pippin arrived.

Pippin was a brute — a 12 pound bully in fighting-fit shape. He tormented 8 pound Victoria mercilessly. Despite our best attempts to keep the two cats separated, Pippin would attack whenever the opportunity arose. Eventually (for this and other reasons), we had to find Pippin another home. Victoria was in seventh heaven. At last she was an only pet, and she loved it.

Then Apollo arrived. He is 80+ pounds of exuberance in the shape of a young boxer. When he entered our home, he was in no way aggressive toward Vicky, but I wouldn’t exactly call him respectful. Yet, the two of them are best friends. Vicky routinely “head bonks” Apollo and taps him with her paw when he doesn’t realize she’s nearby. Apollo loves to lick Vicky, and though I can’t say she looks thrilled to be covered in boxer slobber, she has never reprimanded him for doing so.

The unlikely friendship between my young, muscle-bound boxer and tiny, elderly kitty makes me smile.

There’s a new book out that showcases pictures and stories of love from the animal kingdom. It’s called True Love: 24 Surprising Stories of Animal Affection. It includes:

  • a flamingo that sat on a stone in hopes it would hatch into a baby
  • the surprising bond between a gorilla and a rabbit at Erie Zoo
  • a lovesick dog that snuck out in the middle of the night to track down his lady love
  • a dolphin that jumped into his killer whale best friend’s tank for an overnight play date
  • a hen that acted as a surrogate mother to a litter of puppies

The picture on the cover even reminds me a little bit of Victoria and Apollo.

true love, animal love, can animals love, valentine dog, valentine cat

Check out the Huffington Post for more delightful pictures from the book.

What’s your experience? Do your pets love one another?

Pet Love

I have two Giant Schnauzers - one is 11 and the other 8. The oldest has had surgeries on both back legs for torn ACLs and as he has aged, a certain amount of arthritis has set in. He rides in the van standing up because he doesn't like to lie down with the van is in motion. But if the ride is more than 10 minutes, he gets tired. The younger one seems to know this and lays down on the floor against the back seat and "allows" the older one to sit on top of him. It is the only way the older one will sit while riding. Usually the younger one "tolerates" the older one, but this one act of kindness shows me that he feels much more for his older brother than he lets on.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Our 3 cats and 2 dogs are all rescues and we are amazed at how our little band of former orphans blend so well. There have been periods of high drama, but with advice from our vet and fellow rescuers, all are success stories.

This book looks like a beautiful must have-and a great gift idea!

True Love

Although they may have been the same breed my two Rottweilers were years apart. My male was about 4 when Fuji came into his life --she was a pup who I kept for my husband boss until she went through her first heat and then I said either we breed her or have her fixed so he gave her to me --one of the best gifts I ever recieved. With said she touramented Azar to no end he never hurt her. She bit his back legs until he had sores on them and I had to try to keep her away from him. He would let her steal his bones and toys. They were together until we had to let Fuji go to Rainbow Bridge because she contracted bone cancer--never thought I would be without her first and Azar looked for her everyday until he also went to Rainbow Bridge. She was seven and he was fifteen when they left me. I still miss them very much --they taught me so much about life.

Other than Winston and Darlene ("The Terrible Two") I've not had kitties that were really buddies. I hope they're together on the Rainbow Bridge and having a grand time.

Over the years, I've had lots of kitties, but to date, I've never had a Pile of Cats sleeping on the sofa. They tolerate each other, but there have been no examples of altruism within the herd.

My 4yo Flat Coat and my 7yo long hair male cat are the best of friends. They have been since Gus was a puppy. The other 3 cats ignore him, but he's quite fond of Polu and vice versa.
