Risks from Rodenticides are Changing: Part 2

Yesterday, we talked about changes to the rodenticide market that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has brought about with the aim of improving the health and safety of people, pets, and wildlife. Reducing exposure to long-acting anti-coagulant rodenticides like brodifacoum is obviously good,... READ MORE

Risks from Rodenticides are Changing: Part 1

I talked a couple of weeks back about how the addition of a bittering agent to all ethylene-glycol based antifreeze sold in the United States would hopefully help prevent pet poisonings. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced some changes to the rodenticide market that may (or may... READ MORE

When Buying Pet Insurance is the Right Decision

by Brian Spero     The veterinary industry is on the rise, with Americans spending around $50 billion on their pets in 2011 — the lion's share going to healthcare expenses. Yet with so much money being earmarked for medical costs, only a small percentage of pet owners opt for veterinary... READ MORE

Exercise and the Treatment of Arthritis

Have you seen the video of the otter playing basketball? He has arthritis, and his veterinarian recommended he get more exercise to help keep his joints as healthy as possible. The otter’s caretakers came up with the ingenious idea of training him to dunk a basketball.   READ MORE

Contraceptive Shot Approved for Wild Horses

Living in Wyoming and Colorado for the last ten years has increased my appreciation for wild horses. I’ve always been a bit "horse crazy," and I love my paint gelding Atticus, but there is something extra special about seeing a horse that is beholden to no person gallop across western... READ MORE

Can You Afford to be a Veterinarian?

I used to work in a small town that could support only a handful of veterinary clinics. I was surprised when I heard that a new mixed animal practice was opening up nearby. The cost of living in this area was extremely high, the real estate market (rental and sales) was in the stratosphere, and I had... READ MORE

A Good Death

One of my patients died last night. I am sad that she is no longer with us but nonetheless at ease with her passing. As many of you know, I work in a practice dedicated to end-of-life care. Most of our clients call us for our in-home euthanasia services. Our "typical" patient (if there is... READ MORE

New Help for Overweight Pets

Two conclusions from the latest survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention are downright scary:   1. 53% of adult dogs and 55% of cats are classified as overweight or obese by their veterinarians, and 2. 22% of dog owners and 15% of cat owners think their pets are at a healthy... To Neuter or Not to Neuter?

I have a headache. I just read an article entitled "Neutering Dogs: Effects on Joint Disorders and Cancers in Golden Retrievers." It was well-written, did an admirable job of summarizing previously relevant research, and reported some important findings. Why then, you might be wondering, did... READ MORE

Cats Needed for Stem Cell Study

I’ve been on a regenerative medicine kick, writing several posts recently about stem cells, platelet rich plasma, and gene therapy. This up and coming field tantalizingly offers the possibility of addressing the underlying cause of many serious and chronic conditions (e.g., osteoarthritis, autoimmune... READ MORE
