Some Thanksgiving Gratitude

PrintPrint

November 21, 2012 / (11) comments

It seems like people spend a lot of time these days focused on what is wrong with the world. In some ways, this is beneficial. If we don’t face our problems, we can’t do anything to improve our situations. Conflict can be a strong impetus for change.

At the risk of sounding sappy, however, there is also an awful lot that is right with the world. What better time than Thanksgiving to express a little gratitude for what we have, or for the plain ol’ good luck that has come our way over the last year?

So how about a challenge for this Thanksgiving week? Respond to this blog with something pet-related that you are thankful for. I won’t be posting anything on Thanksgiving itself, but sometime in between over-indulging on pumpkin pie, football, and work (yes, I’m on call this year … I can’t say I’m too thankful about that!), I’m going to log on to Fully Vetted and take a look at the replies for a dose of good cheer.

I’ll get us started with a few of my own.

  • I am thankful that despite the fact that all four of my animals are dealing with chronic diseases (hyperthyroidism, hyperthyroidism and chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic sinusitis), Victoria, Keelor, Apollo, and Atticus are currently all doing fabulously well and enjoying life to its fullest with minimal medical intervention.
  • I am thankful for having shared my life with animal-friends who have taught me invaluable lessons about love, patience, tenacity, dignity, and joy-in-life. Rover, Tangles, Owen, Duncan, Boomer, Annie, Jethro, P.D., Harper, Pippen, and Fugly, you are missed but still loved so very much.
  • Thank you to whoever was looking out for us the day my horse bolted away from a fox and crossed a busy road without me as he galloped back to the barn. It was truly miraculous that all the drivers saw him in time to prevent anyone (horse or human) from being hurt.
  • And finally, thanks to all of you who make Fully Vetted such a remarkable forum for sharing information about the fascinating world of veterinary medicine.

Thankful

I, too, am thankful for all my furry friends.

I'm especially thankful for my little Emma Jean (RIP 2002). She had so many problems. What I learned caring for her has helped me tremendously in caring for critters that joined the family after Emma Jean's battles were over.

I am a hemodialysis patient now for 5+ years and I am thankful that I am still alive but I am also so thankful for my 2 dogs, both 12 years old, a miniature poodle and a pound rescue mutt who have kept me going during the rough times when I would have to go in for surgical procedures for new accesses or clot removal. They mean the world to me. They have allowed to cry and be there for me when I have had bad days. I don't know if I would still be here without them. Just being able to touch one or both of them when I am stressed calms me down.

Thanksgivig

This year I am especially thankful for my three four legged children Polly 12, Masie 9 and Spot(she really has 1) 6. In August my 56 she old sister died unexpectedly and 5 weeks ago we found out my brother has cancer so bad he only has 6-8 months to live. We'll be very lucky to get a month. Within the last 10 years I've lost another brother 53, and both of my parents. I was thankful that they were 88 and 98 years old, only sick 1-2 days, off to Heaven. I digress...
These three angels have been with me the whole way. They have watched me cry, get angry, get depressed. I once stayed in bed for a week. If I didn't have them to care for, I may never have gotten out of bed. I had to play with them, take them outside, feed them, give them treats, show all of them that I loved them, equally. But most importantly, they slept with me at night. They cuddled when I wanted to cuddle, they were at my feet when I needed my space. I am so very grateful ....

I am very thankful for my wonderful animals that share our home and life, they give us such joy, love, laughs, it makes it all worthwhile!

I am grateful for two lady veterinarians in our area who (quietly) work with us to provide low cost spay neuter several times per month.

I am thankful for the experience of a few days of observing a possum that graced our yard recently, came face to face with one of my very friendly labs and both just looked at each other then both went about their own ways.

Finally grateful for ( quasi pet related ) discovering Forks Over Knives which keeps me so very healthy and energetic so I can care for all my animals, and volunteer full time doing spay neuter programs.

I'm grateful for all my pets past and present. My life would truly be incomplete without them. They absolutely provide unconditional love.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. It's wonderful to have a forum to express our thoughts.

Thankful for new man
by mbsmom13 on 11/21/2012 08:17pm

I am grateful for having had the good fortune to have had a lifelong love affair with animals and when least expected found myself paired up to extraordinary companions. My new little man, Hogan, was sent by my best girl who passed 11 years ago; when he carried a live bee in his mouth and into the house I knew that Amber my bee eating girl had picked him out. This will little man's 1st Thanksgiving- To Amber still miss you and as much joy as this little guy brings, my heart is always a little less than full.
Hoping all pet owners share a wonderful holidays with family on Thansgiving

I am thankful that there are vets who work terrible hours so I get emergency care for my dog.

I am thankful that my dog taught me so much about being a patient advocate that I was well trained when I needed to be my mother's patient advocate.

I give thanks every day for the fur-family with whom I live...you have truly been my "family" and seen me through some dark times and given me more than I could ever give back....

For Sadie, my old Lab, I give thanks for every day for another day with you; and when the time comes that you tell me you are ready, I promise that I will thank you by allowing you to go to the Rainbow Bridge with dignity, and with all my love.
For Gracie, thank you for being such a good companion to your sister as she ages.
For Lucy and Rocky, my tripod cats, thank you for the lessons you have taught me about overcoming adversity...you simply got up on three legs and never looked back.
For Bandit, despite your immunosuppression and chronic illnesses, your kitty antics never fail to brighten my day.
For Sabrina, despite your hyperthyroidism and renal failure, thank you for your affectionate nature, even though you often nearly suffocate me at night.
For Bailey, my water-loving cat, thank you for the comic relief that you manage to inject into every day, despite the fact that there are always wet pawprints all over the house.
And to my wonderful veterinarians, thank you for being there for my fur-kids, for providing affordable care, and always keeping my pets as healthy as possible.
And to all the wonderful folks at the shelter where I volunteer, thank you for caring so much about so many homeless animals and working tirelessly toward finding them loving, forever homes. It is an honor to work alongside you!!
