Out with the Old, In with the Old

This morning I cleaned out my file boxes of veterinary articles that I have been collecting for the last 14 years. We’re in the process of remodeling a couple of rooms in our house. The impending move of my office seemed like a good opportunity to weed through those papers that I’d been hauling... READ MORE

The Pros and Cons of Evidence-Based Medicine

I have a thing for science and learning about how things work – it’s one of the reasons I became a veterinarian. I considered becoming a research scientist, but the more I dabbled in the field, the more I realized I liked “big picture” science rather than delving ever more deeply... READ MORE

Chemotherapy Made Simple

I’ve practiced in some very rural parts of the country, meaning that my clients often had to travel long distances to get to and from the clinic (and everywhere else, for that matter). The lack of nearby veterinary care presented real challenges when it came to emergencies, but also affected... READ MORE

Hereditary Deafness in Dogs and Cats

I lived with a deaf dog back in my veterinary school days. He was a pretty classic case of congenital/hereditary deafness — a merle Australian Shepherd that also had vision loss. His owner kept him safe, and he was living a pretty normal and happy canine life, despite his disabilities.   READ MORE

On-line Resources for Purebred Health

Despite currently being the proud adoptive-mom of a beautiful boxer, I’m really a mutt person at heart. There’s something about the one-of-a-kindness of a real Heinz 57 that draws me in. That said, my boxer has provided me with an entrée into the world of purebreds that being a veterinarian... READ MORE

Less is More with Feline Diabetes

Recently, I started taking a bit of a "less is more" approach to treating diabetes in cats. Most of my feline patients resent being brought into the veterinary clinic frequently, resent being restrained for blood draws, resent having their ears pricked for at-home glucose monitoring …... READ MORE

More on Stem Cell Therapy

A while back we talked about ongoing research into the use of stem cells for the treatment of chronic kidney disease in cats. In that post, I admitted to being a bit of a novice in the area of stem cell therapy. To learn more about this up-and-coming field I attended a few lectures on what is currently... READ MORE

The Role of Integrative Medicine in Treating Cancer: Part Two

Yesterday, I passed along some basic information about integrative medicine and the treatment of cancer with an emphasis on conventional options as presented by Dr. Robert Silver at the 2012 Wild West Veterinary Convention. Today let’s look at what he had to say about complementary therapies that... READ MORE

The Role of Integrative Medicine in Treating Cancer: Part One

In my role as a veterinary hospice and in-home euthanasia provider, I treat a lot of pets with cancer. Many of their owners are interested in complementary therapies that will improve their "fur kids" quality of life but that don’t involve a lot of back and forth to the veterinary clinic... READ MORE

The History and Use of Herbal Medicine and its Use Today for Pets

Yesterday I talked about information presented by Robert J. Silver DVM, MS, CVA at the Wild West Veterinary Conference on the topic of integrative medicine. Dr. Silver dedicated a whole session to the important topic of botanical (herbal) remedies. Here are a few of the highlights from this presentation:   READ MORE
