Horse Slaughter – Coming Back to a Town Near You?

In 2007, the last plant that slaughtered horses for human consumption within the United States closed down because language was included in the annual federal appropriations bill barring funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to inspect horse slaughter plants. Without inspections, the... READ MORE

Inspiration in Action

Just down the road from me in Loveland, CO resides the headquarters for Heska Corporation. Heska makes diagnostic tests and other such things for the veterinary market, but that’s not why I mention them today. They recently announced the 2011 winners of their Inspiration in Action award. Panting – Normal or Not?

Dogs pant. They pant when they’re hot, they pant when they’re excited, they pant when they’re scared, and sometimes they seem to pant for no good reason at all (from our point of view, at least). When a dog is panting more than expected, should an owner be concerned? The answer is "maybe."   READ MORE

A Case of the Giggles

Genetic Structure of the Purebred Domestic Dog

A few of my recent posts have generated some questions/comments about similarities between individuals within a breed versus individual variation. This brought to mind a paper that appeared in the May 21, 2004 edition of the journal Science. It was titled "Genetic Structure of the Purebred Domestic... READ MORE
