Hose Water Can Get Hot Enough to Burn

Here’s a new summertime threat I had never thought of before — dogs being burned after being hosed off with scalding hose water. Ten such cases were recently reported in an article published in Veterinary Dermatology.   READ MORE

New Options for Allergic Dogs

Fair warning — I’m writing this post hopped up on antihistamines. This year’s allergy season has been a doozy in Colorado, and I’ve made the decision that the jitters I suffer as a side-effect of these meds are just the price I have to pay for being able to breathe through my... READ MORE

New Research Fails to Clarify Risk Factors for GDV

I’m a little paranoid about GDV (gastric dilatation and volvulus). I’ve never had to worry too much about it as a pet owner before, what with my penchant for small, mixed breed dogs. But now, as an inadvertent owner of a boxer with inflammatory bowel disease, I’m afraid I might experience... READ MORE

Megacolon - A Funny Name, But That's Where the Humor Ends

Megacolon is nothing to laugh about, even though I can’t help but picture a segment of large intestine decked out as a superhero right now (have I been spending too much of my free time with five-year-olds this summer?). The disease is all too common in cats, and despite having a fair prognosis,... READ MORE

Canine and Feline Lymphoma - Similar But Not Identical Diseases

Lymphoma is one of the most common types of cancer that I diagnose in cats and dogs. We’ve talked before about a potential breakthrough in the treatment of this disease in dogs, but haven’t really touched upon the nuts and bolts of the disease and its treatment in either species. Let me set... READ MORE

What's Your Vet’s Strength?

I was watching the Olympics last week when I saw an ad for a TV comedy premiering this fall that has a veterinarian practicing in New York as its main character. Have you seen the trailers? It’s called Animal Practice. The hook for the show is that George Coleman, DVM is great with animals but... READ MORE

Gallows Humor

Being a veterinarian can be a real bummer. I’m not looking for sympathy here, just trying to give some context as to why vets sometimes resort to joking in the face of tragic circumstances. It’s a defense mechanism; a way to slap a band-aid on an emotional wound that can’t be dealt... READ MORE

More on Hemangiosarcoma

I received a few questions in response to last week’s post on hemangiosarcoma in dogs. I thought I’d address them all together here.   READ MORE

Don't Opt Out of Pre-Anesthetic Lab Work

Most veterinary hospitals now recommend pre-operative lab work for pets undergoing general anesthesia. It’s the standard of care these days, but veterinarians still get a fair amount of push-back from owners who don’t understand the importance of these tests.   READ MORE

One Health

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and its partners are in the middle of an initiative that goes by the name "One Health." Have you heard of it? The basic premise is that human, animal, and environmental health and well-being are inescapably connected.   READ MORE
