Nasal Tumors - A Slow and Insidious Killer

Is there anything more striking than the profile of a Collie? The clean lines of that long face are so regal, which is why a case of mine from a couple of years back still sticks in my mind. I was called out to a client’s home to euthanize a Collie with a nasal tumor. Long-nosed breeds are at higher... READ MORE

Don't Turn Your Nose Up at the PU

"Dogpeople" recently asked, "Would you consider discussing the dreaded PU surgery in male cats? Ours had it, and ever since, he's a "new man" with magnificent unblocked streams of urine, lol!" For the uninitiated out there, PU stands for perineal urethrostomy, a surgery... READ MORE

A Case of Chronic Active Hepatitis

"Maggerle" recently commented, "I have an almost 4 yr. old Yorkie, diagnosed w/Chronic Active Hepatitis, about 6 months ago ... I sure would like to see more information about causes, diet and possible/probable outcome..." Here you go, Maggerle. Chronic active hepatitis (CAH),... READ MORE

West Nile Outbreak

Texas is in the middle of a serious outbreak of West Nile Virus (WNV). The mayor of Dallas, the hardest hit locale, has gone so far as to declare a state of emergency and begin aerial spraying for mosquitoes. According to an August 20 update on the situation, the Texas Department of State Health Services... READ MORE

Burnout: Part 4

I hurried into the coffee shop, quickly glancing at customers in the booths to my left and right. Spotting a young man flipping through the condition book at the counter, I headed in that direction. "Tim?" I asked, sitting down beside him. "I’m Karen Elliot, sorry to keep you waiting." "No... READ MORE

Burnout: Part 3

"Quit it, you big thug," I hollered as Togwotee tried to barge into the underbrush. We had been walking trails for a couple of weeks, and Togwotee’s spirits had improved with each passing day. His enjoyment was obvious, but his mischievous side had been uncovered as well. "This... READ MORE

Burnout: Part 2

Joanne’s words stuck with me over the next few days. I couldn’t quite get the picture of Togwotee "waiting" out of my mind. When a farm call had me driving past the barn on Friday morning, I slowed. There he was — head down, hip cocked. As I passed, he raised his eyes and... READ MORE

Burnout: Part 1

I think I’ve mentioned before how much I loved reading the James Herriot books as a child (OK, I admit it, I’ve picked them up a few times as an adult, too). I’m no James Alfred Wight (the author and veterinarian’s real name), but over the next few days I’d like to share... READ MORE

Be Careful Around Pigs at the County Fair This Year

I’ve been to our local county fair twice this week with my daughter. Frankly, she goes for the carnival rides, but I make sure our visits involve at least a few trips to the barns so she can learn a bit about cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, etc., while were there. This year, a very nice young... READ MORE
