Pet nicknames, and what they say about us

PrintPrint

March 15, 2011 / (35) comments

Pet names — as in the nicknames we give to our pets — say lots about who we are and what our pets mean to us. It's a truism that's especially evident in the examination room, whether people coo sweet nothings to their beloveds … or chat blithely on the cell phone after handing you "the cat."

It’s doubtless that something is missing in a relationship when an animal is referred to in terms of genus and species. Not exactly a member of the family, if you know what I mean. Indeed, it seems generally the case that the more terms of endearment a pet boasts, the more bed-time, hike-time, car-time, couch-time, and kitchen-time these pets tend to enjoy.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my take, anyway.

Partly, that's informed by an interesting exercise I participated in as a veterinary student in my third year of school at the University of Pennsylvania. By way of bereavement assistance training, a small group of us were asked to list every single moniker attributed to a past pet of our choice.

An odd choice of exercises, perhaps, but a very effective one. Because by enumerating our deceased pets' appellations of adoration we inevitably come in direct contact with what most of our clients are feeling at the time of their pets' loss. And that's a crucial emotion to keep close whenever dealing with pet owners whose pets impending or recent deaths means a soft touch will be in order.

Makes sense, right? Because it behooves veterinarians to pay close attention to what pet owners need. And nicknames may well be among the most telling of them.

P.S. What do you call your pets in the comfort and privacy of your own home?

My heart dog Luna is nickname, variously, Lunar Landing, Luna-Lou, Lulu, LuLuLu, but most regularly just "beloved".

All my dogs have nicknames, depending on the time of day, my mood, their behavior ;) Some share terms of endearment - most at some point are called "my love" or "sweetness". But only Luna is beloved. So much so that some of my friends refer to her as "beloved" when they are talking about her.

She has a piece of my heart, for sure.

Oh gosh...we have some of the silliest nicknames ever for Dahlia. We have called her, at varying times: Dahlia Doodledog, Dahlia Doodleheimerschmidt (usually sung to the song!), Sweet Pickle, Snook pookie (seriously), Goofus brain (usually when she's doing something silly), Butterball (she likes to steal butter), and Ferocious Beast (she rolls over and bares her teeth in a smile; this has given her her "full" name of Dahlia F. Beast).

If I could include a picture, you'd see why Winifred Louise, a Himmie former-feral, was The Lovely Louise.

by greyborz on 03/15/2011 07:12am

Both wonderful boy dogs - Seek, the Borzoi is fondly called Termite (you can imagine why) & Geoffrey, the Greyhound, is the Heathen (also not too much imagination required to understand his personality). They've had these nicknames since they were pups & have yet to outgrow them four years down the road.

Footsie, our 2-year-old schnoodle is also known as Footsie Lambones, FootsieRama, Footsie Finklestein; but when she wears her leopard skin coat, which she adores, she becomes Zsa Zsa!

This is not about nicknames, more about the point you raised about how you can see a lot about relationships based on names. One of my pet peeves is people who give their pets rude or insulting names and think it's funny. I can't think of any specific examples right now but names like "Dopey" or "Fugly."

by susanbt on 03/15/2011 10:48am

You know, you really can't tell out of context. I had a zillion nicknames for the cat I loved to pieces, and about half of them had "pig" in them, even though he wasn't fat. It was just silliness. I adored him with all my heart. If you heard me call him "cat-pig" or "cattus pigulettus" maybe you would think I was insulting him, but that was the last thing in my mind.

All my pets have silly, whimsical nicknames. I sing them silly songs, I talk to them, I call them funny names. In the end, it's the interaction. It deepens the bond from both sides, which is good for both the human and the pet.

by donnadw on 03/15/2011 10:50am

I agree, when it's nicknames being referred to but I think it takes a certain amount of disrespect to name a living creature something rude or offensive.

by Dr. Patty Khuly on 03/15/2011 11:37am

It bugs me, too. Sometimes it's funny in an irreverent sort of way (think: "Infidel" or "Terrorist Kitty") but when it's a racial slur or a put down ("Shithead" comes to mind) it gets my hackles up for sure. What can that possibly say about how much you love your pet?

by Dr. Patty Khuly on 03/15/2011 11:42am

Oops. I just realized that I have a dog named Slumdog, A racial slur if there ever was one. It's all contextual, is what I'd have to conclude. Which makes any name potentially acceptable. Even "Piss-Pants." ;-)

by donnadw on 03/15/2011 11:45am

I dunno-Slumdog to me indicates a survivor of a tough environment, not a slur against the animal itself....Shithead? I can't even imagine that.

by kate_wa on 03/17/2011 05:40pm

My partner's mother adopted a dog from a local shelter recently. She lives in an area of Florida that's pretty rough, so dog-fighting in the area is a sad given. The dog was named, at adoption "Bait". I was horrified, and of course the dog now has a different name....

by donnadw on 03/18/2011 11:00am

That is a perfect example of what I was talking about. I am so glad that dog is safe and has a loving name (and home!).

Is it OK to say this?
by deeidub on 03/15/2011 09:17am

One of my favorite memories involves my late mother and our family cat, Preston. I was born into a family of "dog people" who were really all-round animal lovers, but liked to pretend that cats were inferior to dogs. As I grew up I pestered my folks into a few cat adoptions, the third of which was midnight-black Preston. My mom started out with an innocuous enough nickname, Piston. That progressed into Pissy, Piss Head, Piss Pants, Piss Pot, and ultimately Piss for Brains. I knew she loved him, though, when he knocked one of her favorite antique finds from the mantle of the fireplace and the beautiful cranberry glass hurricane lamp smashed into a gazillion pieces. Preston lived to tell about it, but I think it might have cost him a couple of those 9 lives.

New kitty Rainbow is Little Missy or Missy Kissy
Max is Maxy Man or the Hulk because of his size.
Sunny is Sunny the Bunny or Little Man.
Mickey is Baby Boy.

Not very original but seems to suit each personality.

by HeatherM74 on 03/15/2011 10:36am

My Chinese Crested, Junie Bee is Junie, BeBe (my 12 yr old calls her this), Baby, and when she is doing something naughty, DOG! LOL I also call my boys SON! when they are in trouble too, so it's not for lack of loving them. Now, when I hand her over to the vet, it's Junie, but if I'm there able to give her attention, it would be BeBe or Baby.

My 2 lovebirds are Twinkle and Woodstock and there nicknames are Twink-A-Din K (the k goes up against the din, but the system is saying it's inappropriate) and WoodyWoodyWoodyWoody. :)

My budgies nicknames are just shortened versions of their names - Lucky and Penelope really don't have nicknames - Lemon Meringue is Lemon, Angle Cakes is Angel (which sounds so much better now that his cere has turned blue and we know he's a boy) and Blueberry Pie is Blueberry. They aren't tame, they prefer their flock and won't interact with us, which might be why they don't have cutesy nicknames.

Flaco gets called My Big handsome boy/man, Big Butt, Little Face.

Kitteh nicknames
by mharding01 on 03/15/2011 11:37am

Loki is often "Loki Bear" because he is built like a bear (kinda stumpy) and often acts likes a bear awakened prematurely from hibernation. This is not Loki but it sure looks/acts like him:

http://icanhascheezburger.com/2007/02/13/you-woke-bearcat-from-hibernation/

Lacey is "Laceyface" because she has such a lovely one. Pumpkin is "Pumpy" or just "Pump" sometimes.

I used to call my neighbor's dog Sparky "Sparky Doodles" for no particular reason except it seemed to fit.

by jennie on 03/15/2011 11:51am

rosie, our min pin, is often referred to as "the cat wrangler". she's in charge of corraling rex should he decide to step outside. we also call her "the kraken" when she buries herself under the bedcovers and rex decides it's a good time to walk on her.

Food Fetish Freak
by deeidub on 03/15/2011 12:54pm

I hope I'm not the only nutjob who does this--I name my pets after food. And they have to LOOK like the food. A few years back I adopted 3 cats all within a month of each other. Two were at the same shelter, and I named them Oreo (Orie, Orie-Borie-Alice, Orsz) and Nilla Wafer (Nillie, Nillie Banillie, Silly Nillie). From a different shelter came Cocoa (Cokie, Cocoa Puff, Cocoa Loco). I used to tell people who were relatively patient with my weirdness that I could easily turn all 3 cats into types of beans: Nilla Bean, Cocoa Bean and Orson Bean (whose name certainly shows my age and probably mystifies many readers here.)

No Names
by The Hobbet on 03/15/2011 01:04pm

I've never been much for nicknames - the family I grew up in just didn't use nicknames much. Years ago I had a Malamute who earned the nickname "The Thundering Herd" as a puppy, so I registered him as that. Other than their names I often call them Sweetheart, Sweeetie, Honey, and Darling. But I don't think their lack of nicknames is a reflection of my attachment. I spend most of my time playing with them, talking to them, cuddling with them, and doing things with them.

Listening to nicknames
by Kattonic Mom on 03/15/2011 01:45pm

In the waiting room of the vet's office, you can tell the real "pet moms/dads" from the "owners". Even the not so nice ones like "$hit head" mean the person has a handle on the animals personality. Zippy, who turns 14yo today is Princess Zipporah, Pretty Princess, Toots, Sweet Love, Baby girl, CC (for crabby calico), Grumpster, Cranky Pants and sometimes JUST STOP IT, STOP for short! Sadie is Baby Boo, Tumtum, Belly Baby or hubby will call her Brush Piggy, she just loves to be brushed. Speedy, my giant 18 pound male is often called Tubby Hubby, he thinks he's married to both females and, though he's not really fat, tubby fits. I call him Boyfriend, Sweety Pie, Handsome, Doofus, Chichi (the initials for cement head idiot), but when he comes to snuggle and kiss me goodnight I call him Lover Boy. He's stopped the girls from fighting, he gives kisses and he follows the ladies around and gets them what they want, which is why my hubby thinks that he thinks he's their husband. They often get tired of his ministrations and whap him on the head, being the jovial doofus he is he just accepts it.

My cats have various nicknames. Neko is sometimes known as Nyan( the Japanese word for meow, because she's talkative), Nyanko, Mi-Ke-Neko, Nekonyan, Coffee cat, Broccoli cat, Green pepper cat, and Little Oomph, among many others. Priya is mostly known as Proomph (the sound she makes when she flops down), Bagheera, Kicking cat, or my least favourite (which my boyfriend calls her), Dumb*ss cat.

Well I must admit my husband went above and beyond the one time he named a dog. A little completely matted cocker spaniel was running in our field all the while occasionally darting out into traffic. When it was all said and done my husband proclaimed we were all dumb @uckers for running into the road and it was a miracle no one got hurt. Thus his nickname became @ucker. His real name became Tucker and he was adopted by a wonderful family. He has gone on to cgc and is a therapy dog and best of all he has changed an entire family. They had never believed in rescues for their pets. Thanks to a dumb Tucker they now do. Btw that dog is one of the smartest dogs I've known.
Banjo is Bubby boy,my boy,big dummy
Sandy(cocker spaniel)-fuzzy nuts,Teddy bear, the general
Belle is simply " aaarrrr aaaarrrr" (it's how she barks..slow and drawn out)
Mae is baby beagle, bad beagle and little girl
Lilly (3-1-11 rip little girl) was Sweet Lilly.

My staffie is Jack Bow-wow-er and is registered that way (for those who don't know, that's after Jack Bauer from the show 24). It always gives the ladies at the courthouse a chuckle come registration time every year. :) He also goes by the names of Dude, Du-bug, Bug, Houdini, lazy bum, Killer (he only knows death by kisses), Monster (whenever he's waiting for something he resembles a stuffed gremlin with an out of control butt wag), and NO.

Each of our 8 cats has at least 2 nicknames.

Toranaga-Tori, Toes, Toe-toes, Booger, Boogs, Tori also has a name sign. He and one other cat are the only ones so far. :P
Maya-My-mys, Maya-papaya
Lucretia-Cree, Creepy, Creepy-geepy, Cree-cree
Sam-Samson, Bambam, Samsam, Bammers, Sammers
Musashi-Mush, Mu'shi, Moo
Juli-Jujus, Woowie, Jooz, Joozies
Noble-Nonoes.

I couldn't list the other cat, because the system did not like the first 2 letters of her name, "eff" and "you." Go figure.

I'm more into the nicknames than my boyfriend is. He puts up with a lot. :P
