Halloween Costume Hell for Pets? You Decide ...

October 19, 2010 / (13) comments

Last week I somehow stumbled onto this post on creepy kid costumes. Truth be told, it was in the service of my twelve-year-old’s annual costume quandary that I got sucked into this uncomfortable Halloween Hell. And while the kid costumes were truly disturbing, I couldn’t help thinking the animal versions were similarly [un]-inspired.

But then, I may be overly sensitive. You decide:

Here are the creepy kid pics. Enter the baby chicken with the Alien appendage...

The baby lobster...

And the Thanksgiving turkey baby...

Yet I’m not so sure these are the worst I’ve ever seen. Consider what people are willing to do to their own pets:

Jack Sparrow? Now that’s evil.

The cat in the lobster pot is every bit as freaky.

As is the comestible beagle.

So what does it say about us that we’re wont to dress up our beloveds in these disturbing garments? Does it mean we’re perhaps not so lovingly inclined? Or is it evidence of our extreme esteem for them that we’re willing to expend loads of time and energy on stuff as extraneous and superficial as ... Halloween costumes.

Of course I’m sure you’ll agree it’s the latter. After all, those who are willing to dress up their patients and/or their own pets really don’t have much of a leg to stand on. Sure, my two examples may not be quite so creepy, but I obviously don’t have as much time on my hands as those who came up with the costumes detailed above.

Here’s Sadie (a dog bite patient who’s been coming in to get bandaged twice weekly for the past three weeks).

This week she happened to get treated to an extra bandage. She didn’t seem to mind.

Then there’s Vincent. This year he’s a flower. But then, that’s only because Target happened to be offering a $2.50 special on this cute petal-y collar. I love it!

So are my own examples creeepy? Well, maybe ... but one thing I do know is this: Damn, they’re cute! So what does that say about me?

In my opinion, the childrens' costumes are just downright creepy. Who would want their baby to look like the main course for Thanksgiving dinner?

Vincent, however, is downright adorable as a fragile flower.

Those who care to share their pics are fee to do so. Send us the URL to your favorite Halloween pics past and present. It's ok if they're not creepy. Better, I think.

costumes

I used to work as a trainer at Petsmart. Worst day of the year for us was the costume contest day. The pets looked miserable, and some of the owners took it SO seriously.

Some dogs tolerate costumes. I personally like the cute collars like vincent was wearing. But really, is it really worth it to dress your dog up, and drag it to a store in hopes of winning a $5 gift card?

My Dog Likes It!
by on 10/19/2010 11:56am

I used to swear I would never be one of those people who dresses my dog, but... she really likes it. Of course, her "clothes" consist of a jacket, a towel that she thinks is clothing, and a pumpkin costume similar to the jacket. The jacket was $3 on close-out, and she has short fur/ thin skin. When it's chilly, I'll put her coat on before she goes out, and she gets excited and bouncy. Then she began running around wearing her towel after we dried her off from rainy excursions. Now she has a pumpkin costume and seems to enjoy it.

On the other hand my cats hate costumes. I have a recent picture of one of them wearing a miniature baseball helmet and scowling menacingly.

OK the chicken alien costume is freaky but pretty darn funny. All the more so because of the kids facial expression! Perfect! The kid as lobster in a pot is kinda cute.

Vincent is adorable as always.

Not a huge fan of pet costumes but that said some dogs love the extra attention and don't care. I say take your cue from the pet you have.

In full disclosure I have been looking for a suit jacket for a perfect "Agent J" costume for years now. (think Frank the pug from MIB)

We are saying no to Halloween costumes, thank you very much. We are dogs and not dolls.

Tess' Nightmare - Costume
by on 10/20/2010 11:46am

Neither of my Boston Terriers like costumes or clothing.
I put a Halloween costume on Tess the first year I had her. She hated it. It was on for 10 minutes to take pictures. You should see the pictures! She's in HELL. Never again.

Harpo removes all clothing or coats himself within 10 seconds and then will help Tess remove her coat...so now we go without.

Can you explain what, exactly, is "creepy" about the dog in the Jack Sparrow costume? Aside, of course, from the fact that the dog doesn't look at all unhappy or uncomfortable, which apparently conflicts with your ideas.

The baby costumes are all creepy, because you went to some effort to find creepy examples.

Some dogs, many dogs, don't like clothing and are unhappy in it. Other dogs don't mind at all and love the extra attention they get. I don't think I've ever met a cat that liked playing dress-up, but then, I haven't met any Sphinx cats, and they might have a different opinion.

My own won't walk in the rain without her raincoat, appreciates boots when there's snow and ice (and salt) on the ground, and on chilly days comes running when I get her jacket out. She's totally cool with wearing cute outfits to the nursing home when we visit, too.

But then, I've never dressed her up as the main course for dinner, either.

I think it's the no underwear thing. Freaky. Just me, I guess.

You know, as little as dogs need clothes, I think they need underwear even less. :)
