Tacky “As-Seen-On-TV” Pet Products, And Why They Bug Me

PrintPrint

March 22, 2010 / (10) comments

Almost every day I get approached by a new product marketer or manufacturer with respect to some “revolutionary” product I’d be stupid not to hawk to my readers.

It’s really kind of insulting when you get right down to it. I mean, what kind of blog do they think I run? A leash-and-collar outfit? A beat-the-best-price and drugs-for-less place? Why would I deign to sell YOU — people whose trust I cherish — on their who-knows-what brand of product or service?

But I guess they can’t be blamed. After all, how else would a manufacturer and marketer of a truly excellent product communicate its excellence to the world? Gotta start somewhere ... and a blog offers just enough cred to merit attention from a small group of early adopters.

I get it. I went to business school, even. So I know. Still, I can’t help shuddering at pitches like these:

Just Spray!

"Spray in your pet’s mouth and PLAQUE ATTACK’s all natural formula quickly and safely mixes with saliva to coat the teeth and gums. The ingredients then do all the work to break up bacteria, plaque, and built-up tartar. Application helps eliminate these causes of bad breath, leaving your pet’s mouth healthy and clean. Best of all, it’s just that easy to use!

"This Offer Is NOT AVAILABLE In Stores! Fill out your form below to Order Your PLAQUE ATTACK Now!

How many would you like?

OK, so that’s a direct quote from an offer I received in my email inbox. Think it’s worthy? In case you have any doubts as to my representation of its hard (and tacky)  sell, check out the cheesy veterinarian-narrated video that accompanies it (how embarrassing for her!).

The sad truth is that I receive about ten or so similar unsolicited emails every week. Pathetic, right? I certainly don’t respond. Indeed, I scorn their advances with posts like this one.

But occasionally — OK, so only very, very rarely — I’ll get pitched an offer I can’t refuse … an actual product with merits that seem to transcend its pitch. I can’t think of an example right now, but let it suffice to say this endangered species happens, and when it does I can only think, I’m so glad to live life as an eternal optimist. Because otherwise, how would the cream ever rise to the top?

Have any better-than-expected “as-seen-on-TV” products you’d like to share? I’m all ears...

FURminate away!
by Dog Mama on 03/21/2010 04:23am

Actually one product that seriously really exceeded my expectation is dog de-shedding tool - the FURminator. It really works beautifully and I am very happy I tried it and so are all owners who took my recommendation.

A Cheaper Version of 'PetzLife' tooth spray and gel?
by Pai on 03/22/2010 02:11am

PetzLife actually works rather well. I'd be interested to know that the ingredients are in the 'As Seen on TV' variant.

But does it REALY work?
by boxwoodmanor on 03/22/2010 09:23am

If it really does work, then tacky or not, a recommendation would be in order. Then again, the vets don't have time to do "product testing", right?

Haven't bought anything for my pets off TV ads. I do love my Snuggie though. My heater failed suddenly this winter, and that Snuggie helped keep me warm until the new system was installed.

I'm with Dog Mama and Dr.K. re the Furminator. I think I got about eight cats worth of fur from the two cats the first few times I used it. I initially assumed the videos of it working were faked. Both cats like it. Now, a few gentle swipes in the evening on the uppermost surface of whichever cat is closest keeps them neat and shiny.

I've crunched numbers for one of the biggies in the TV direct response industry. Some of the stuff is quite good, much is junk. I suggest resisting being the first kid on the block to order whatever it is, be wary of continuity programs where your card gets hit every month, and to pay attention to the billing. Dispute any charges you think are wrong immediately. Lots of those companies make a profit on the non-refundable shipping and handling charges alone so it pays to look for the product in retail stores if it seems interesting.

Who's that Puppy?
by Heather on 03/26/2010 11:52am

I'm in love with the puppy in the picture. Completely taken by the puppy. I am a pile of goo.

The puppy is rather cute
by MyCat on 04/29/2010 06:55am

The puppy is rather cute isn't he! At any rate, I think you are spot on, vets aren't about product testing, you're about taking care of pets - and that's just how it should be!
