Is it OK for My Dog to Drink Out of the Toilet? (And a New Platform for My Dolittler Readers...Finally!)

March 19, 2010 / (15) comments

Here’s my first ever FullyVetted post to include my Dolittler peeps. My DailyVet readers have had more than a week to adjust and deal with the creepy-crawly tech-ey bugs, while Dolittler readers have thus far been spared. But no longer … Fully Vetted is ready for prime time. So welcome, all!

Now, on to the topic at hand:

OK, so it seems gross, but once you get a grip of the sanitary reality of the average American toilet bowl … sucking down toilet fare doesn’t seem so bad anymore.

Lest you begin to question my sanity, let me explain:

Dogs love toilet water. Cats, too, though their reach often limits their ability (much though I’m sure it irks them). The reason for this phenomenon is simple: The stuff tastes great. To those living free from any association with human waste, why wouldn’t a constantly, mechanically refreshing source of water seem akin to Evian’s finest?

Then there’s this to consider: eau de toilet (loosely speaking, of course) seems colder than the average bowl of water (porcelain is good that way). It’s a place most humans will deign to maintain under pristine conditions. And we tend to leave the lid up so invitingly. Otherwise, how would pets ever get into the habit? (Ahem...on this latter point I direct my comments most pointedly to the men in this audience.)

But it’s not all that bad, I’ll submit. Indeed, I’ll readily confess to having left the lid up to ensure my dogs got their fix — when my dogs were big enough to reach, anyway (my current family members are too puny to partake of the magic waters). After all, it’s only H2O.

Unless you go in for the 2,000 Flushes-style products (something I’ll  never recommend to pet owners whose charges might lap up this creepy blue stuff — or to anyone, really), toilet water is (almost) every bit as hygienic as tap water. Studies actually show that toilet water has a lower bacterial count than other bathroom surfaces. Your average household door handle, in fact, offers a more populous cluster of bacteria than your basic toilet water — and yet we freak when our hairbrushes take an unfortunate dive.

As someone whose cell phone recently took a fatal dip, I can tell you that the Geniuses at the Apple store had a fit when they learned of the toilet fiasco (after they had all but licked it in their efforts to revive the thing).

In response to all this collective commode-related hand-wringing, I can’t help but think we humans need to get over this irrational fear of toilet water. 'Ain’t nothing to fear but fear itself ... and perhaps an empty bowl of water.

Well, congratulations on the new digs. First Bark, now this, you're showing up in all the right places.

Thanks again for linking to my blog from the old Dolittler. It was an honor.

All the best on the new platform and for all the wonderful things to come.

problems reading the blog

Patty,
The blog came through will all sorts of extra letters and symbols. I could read it, but it was more like figuring out a puzzle.
When I went online, it was ok, but I prefer to get the email blogs.

My gang don't seem to want to drink out of the toilet, though two of them are quite tall enough. I wonder if it has something to do with how we're kind of obsessive about keeping their drinking water fresh. Three dogs, two large sources of water replaced at least daily and scrubbed regularly. One has Cushing's and drinks a LOT; another really, really loves fresh water. So I am a little surprised they don't go for the toilet on occasion.

We just replaced a horribly embarrassing rust-and-lime stained toilet, and are planning to get a flush-through to keep the unscrubbable brown stain from forming on this one. Our water is already filtered and still very hard--very sweet, but very hard--and I don't think it'll be possible to keep it from staining otherwise. We'll be watching the dogs carefully, of course.

Hi Dr. Patty, Congrats on your new venue. The ads are a bit annoying but worth the while to read your blog.

I love the fact that you addressed pets drinking out of the tolit. I have been trying to tell all the dorks in my house that the tolit water is fresher than the dog bowl for years now! Even our ferrets climb on the tolit seat to dip down into the fresh water...especially my biggest ferret Moke' he love to jump up as soon as the tolit is flushed. The freshest I guess!
Love all you write about!

Yes, as our human said, "As refreshing as a drink out of the toilet." Thanks for correcting this percieved social faux paw!
Get it? Faux PAW. We are the funniest Golden Retriever's around.

Woofingly,

Tucker and Tanner
(P.S. Don't tell our human we wrote in. We are not supposed to use his computer).

Sorry everyone - My dumb brother Tucker does not know how to spell or use spell check. He meant perceive. I am going to close the toilet lid so he can't take a drink.

Woof,

PrettyCat and SmartCat like to look in the bowl during a flushing but prefer their Drinkwell fountain for imbibing. L.A. water has lots of chlorine in it & doesn't smell all that good to humans either. This building dates from the '50s and there are often episodes of rust in the water too.

(The mew site is okay. I'd also like to see a mobile version for use with my cellphone.)

no likey

:(
i don't like being used by a service. My first log-in experience is asking me all kinds of things. :( If i get any advertising emails in my inbox from PetMD i'll be a tad PO'd.

I wonder if you'll lose posters from it? Likely if one has to log in separately like i just did everytime, and all that stuff comes up.

And will you still be posting about Tulip? and antics? i'll check in periodically for that!

I think congrats are in order. just being a selfish blogger at the moment! i like to zip thru my fav blogs and zip out. this might take some gettin used to.

RSS feed please

I also do not like being asked for personal information. So I just do not give it. Signing in and out is not fun and of course,
we all have so many names and passwords, it is impossible to remember them.

I liked the way your old blog appeared on my bloglines account.

Format/Feed/Archives?
by on 03/22/2010 06:41pm

The format... don't care for it. It reminds me of an early 80s AOL layout, and the default text is startlingly large for me, which immediately feels like it's "dumbed down." I don't know why, but large text on the web always makes me assume a site is dumbed down. That might be my issue.

There's a RSS icon on the right, below the "Sign up to receive Fully Vetted in your inbox" field. I signed up for it and ended up with an article which, interestingly, doesn't appear to be on the Fully Vetted site yet (it has tomorrow's date).

Finally, Please, Dr. K., have you given any thought about what the auto-redirect from the old Doolittler site to the PetMD site did to your archives? They're inaccessible. I actually signed up for this site specifically to ask about this third point. I used to refer to the Doolittler archives a *lot*. Referred people to your older articles when I knew that there was something relevant there, etc. Their being inaccessible is quite a loss, and I hope you consider some provision for making them available somewhere in the future.

Good luck with the new blog. I hope that this offers you a wider platform and audience!

Home, sweet home...
by on 10/08/2010 08:55am

Maybe few years ago for me (until I get my German Shepherd - Meggy) that sounded weird but now, I`m almost OK with that. As you know dog`s spit disinfect almost all in 10 minutes. So I`m not worried anymore... Well, almost not. It`s not so pleasurable to sit on the toilet where 5 minutes ago my dog was standing and drinking water. Fur not so sweet)

But if you want to end this process just buy new toilet (euro style). They works differently - water flush all the s... sorry) things and goes itself! So that`s mean that your dog could not drink from toilet anymore and should resume to do it from the bowl.

Try it.
