Cat Stuff That Makes This Vet Long for the Feline Warm Fuzzies

July 08, 2010 / (6) comments

The fact is my son’s pulmonary troubles preclude feline integration into our indoor household. But that doesn’t mean I’m not constantly drawn to them. Sometimes it’s not even the cats themselves, but all the super-cool toys, trinkets, gadgets and doo-dads that accompany them.

For my dogs it’s all about the rubber balls, colorful rope toys, neato collars and dangly tags. And they’re great. But when I take a look at the cat stuff … sometimes I’m just amazed. I mean, the toys are cool (lasers are especially entertaining), but the furniture … ooooh … that’s where I lose it.

Here’s one that makes the lowly bookshelf look like a thing best left bereft of its tomes (get a Kindle, already, will you?). It's the Sky Climber and it looks best in cherry, I think:

Thanks to Gina over at PetConnection for that one.

And for those who think their cat's claws are best removed, consider the aesthetically satisfying alternative to "normal" furniture. These heavy-duty corrugated cardboard items are not only functional and beautiful, they make for the ultimate scratching posts. Consider the Sweet Lounge Cat Bed and Cheeky Chaise Cat Bed/Scratcher:

Or this cardboard "cat cocoon":

You know, whenever I write on the importance of keeping cats indoors (for their safety and that of the wildlife they prey upon), I inevitably get letters on the fat-cat problem among felines. As in: the problem with keeping cats indoors is that, while it might be safer, it’s not healthy in the long run if obesity is an issue. Hence, some additional impetus to write about products like this one:

Cool, right? Sigh … If only I could keep a kitty...

I also love cats, my Fellesa was 21 yrs old when she pass away. We now have elder Doves and old dogs. I just go and play with my Grandcat Charlie have fun, let my kids deal with the cat litter.

Isn't it funny what pet owners will spend to keep their pets happy?
I think it's inspired by guilt- I work all day, and my poor animals have to suffer by sleeping on my bed, or taking up positions at the window (on the very expensive cat tree) to watch the birds at the strategically placed bird feeder.
I buy high dollar dog beds for my old labrador retriever, then end up taking my own bed apart and putting mattress and box spring on the floor, so she can sleep in my bed all day.
Don't even get me started on what I spend on food and treats and toys.

My cats have a variety of cat furniture. Max is now looking down on me from about 6' - the highest shelf on one of his scratching posts. No they're not as attractive as the Sky Climber, but they are actually designed for all cats - even large kitties. There's hardly any room for stretching and scratching in the Climber.

Love the other items too. However, Max is a big guy. Needs big stuff. Sometimes a paper bag is sufficient. Won't stop me from trying to find other items to tempt him though.

I've been a reader/subscriber for over a year. I love what you are doing. Your love of animals touches my heart. But your comment regarding a Kindle versus maintaining a library made me laugh out loud. I guess I'm old enough (49) to love the feel of paper, and appreciate the time before spell checkers, et al. (Sorry, I got distracted as my border collie is trying to help me type. She can't spell worth a damn.) I can't help but think of the lost libraries of Alexandria and other lost texts. Paper, in my opinion, is much more durable than electronic bits and bytes. But that is my opinion.

In the meantime, I understand you take a beating for your views. I just hope you know that there all people like me who appreciate what you are doing. Keep up the good work.

Best regards,
Bill (with some help from Nikki, the Border Collie).

Guess most of the readers of this blog are dog people.. :)

Great options you chose, but most of those are quite expensive. There are a lot of less expensive options out there as well for the frugal cat owner. I love a lot of the ikea hacks that are out there for cat box containment units and climbing shelves.
