New Week ... New Outlook ... New Format ... New Videos (Thanks, Nulo!) ... and a New Ad for FullyVetted

August 30, 2010 / (28) comments

Last week sucked. Vincent had to have two CTs, a myelogram, and finally, back surgery to remove the pressure on his swollen spinal cord. (More on this, tomorrow.) Then my iPhone got stolen. My car’s AC died in the Miami heat. I misplaced my driver’s license. And finally, lightning literally struck, resulting in one exploding modem (loud!) and a veritable epidemic of household appliance death.

Three things managed to get me through last week with my sanity intact: an extended warranty on my 2003 vehicle, homeowner’s insurance, and a boyfriend who happens to practice small animal surgery with worl' class skeels.

In the end, Vincent came through bedraggled and sore, but otherwise in great shape for the next few weeks of home-based rehab. (I can’t afford the best kind of rehab and even if I could, I’d have a hard time finding the time to drive the forty miles twice a week.) So I have every confidence he’ll pull through with characteristic Vincent indestructibility. (No wimp, that one.)

Too bad I can’t say the same for my iPhone’s prospects.

This, however, is a new week. To which we might as well adopt a novel, positive outlook.

Just in time for all this smarmy optimism and wishful thinking comes this opportune news: FullyVetted is evolving. Really. Though this is just one more step in the right direction and in no way represents a final incarnation, you may now explore more than one realm within FullyVetted. Look up to the top of this page, just beneath the headline, and you’ll see your new choices in a small navigation bar-tab format: "blog," "videos" and "about."

We’re still working on the "about" section, trying out new formats, gathering pics and storylines and working the bugs out of the interactive (!) features. The "video" section is still tiny, and my social media hooks are still in production … but, well, what can I say? We’re getting there. The "about" page is due up later this week, and after the week I just suffered, this degree of progress smacks of manna.

In particular, I’m excited — if somewhat stressed — by the addition of the two videos added to the video section. Sponsored by Nulo (a new, super-premium pet food company dedicated to weight loss/ideal weight maintenance) these two videos feature me — hence the stress.

What can I say? I have a hard time watching myself in action. No matter. For those of you who can’t stand to watch me in action, either, there’s the prospect of a podcast, and there’s always the blog, of course.

Which brings me to my final bit of positive news to help me get my week started out right: Last month PetMD came up with a glorious ad for FullyVetted. And this month, it’s in The Bark! Yay!

Propitiously positioned just under an article by Dr. Nick Trout (you must read his book, Tell Me Where It Hurts), I couldn’t have asked for better positioning — or a better publication to parlay into more FullyVetted readers.

Up for tomorrow: The power of the CT scan. (And more stories from Vincent’s big day in the OR.)

And later this week: Why more pet owners are electing to have their pets’ food shipped to them. And why veterinarians like me are loving it.

Patty-

Doesn't your iPhone have GPS?? Call it and see where it leads you :) Talk to Apple - they can tell you how to trace it.

That is a lot of stuff to happen in a week.

A whole house surge protector can save electronics from electrical surges. Mine cost $150 and talented people can install their own, installation cost me another $100.

Now I ignore thunderstorms.

Had this happen in our home/office several years ago. We were using surge protectors on many machines - useless. Thank heavens for home and business owners insurance (and computer recovery specialists!)

Nulo
by tish on 08/30/2010 08:31am

I had a "live chat" with a Nulo employee on August 16, 2010. I was researching new dog foods. I asked the representative if any ingredients in Nulo were manufactured specifically in China. The answer I got was--"some of your chelated vitamins and minerals are manufactured in the Pacific Rim". Just a heads up for people trying to avoid ingredients from China.

Tracking an iPhone
by Dr. Patty Khuly on 08/30/2010 09:11am

Yeah, I have MobileMe. I love it. Costs $100 a year and it's great for finding your phone when you've misplaced it or for when you want to keep tabs on your son's whereabouts (works great for this!).

But it does not help you one bit if the person at the restaurant who found your phone under the table is wily enough to turn it on exactly one time (at the restaurant), read the sad, "Please return my phone, $100 reward!" message, and decide he/she will get a better deal by leaving the phone turned off until someone can jailbreak it.

In other words, the GPS did track it to the restaurant. But there's nothing more the management can/will do at this point. Not if the phone is turned off and almost certainly no longer on the property.

That's Miami for you. :-(

Comment on Titering
by Gia on 08/30/2010 09:33am

Dr. Khuly, Your statements aren’t taking the sterile immunity and direct correlation between humoral (circulating ) immunity and tissue cell-mediated immunity into account as induced by viruses such as distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis virus in dogs, and panleukopenia virus in cats. So, in fact your rather eye-catching title of the article and verbiage within provide misleading rhetoric for the non-scientist pet owners.

Cell –mediated immunity is an essential component of protection against disease, as are secretory immunity and immune memory cells. However, published scientific literature by veterinary immunologist experts such as Drs. Ian Tizard and Ron Schultz has shown that for the viruses listed above, there is a direct correlation between the level of circulating humoral immunity [i.e. titer test results] and the protection against disease when animals are exposed to the street virus in challenge studies. While this direct relationship dos not pertain to all infectious agents [i.e. corona virus protection is not determined by titers as protection is in gastrointestinal tract immunity], it does pertain to these most clinical severe dog and cats viral disease as well as rabies virus [which is why certain titer levels are required for importing animals into rabies-free counties]. Do you have any training in Immunology ?

That is indeed a sucky week. Sorry! An online friend lost her brand new iPhone 4 while on vacation in Shanghai last week. Even if she had been able to locate it, she thinks it was probably outside on the ground through a torrential downpour. I feel sick for both of you. :(

Soooo I hate to bring this up, but like Orare I also get the email newsletter and the right side of the text was obscured today. I have AdBlock+, so it wasn't an ad for me but just a beige rectangle. If PetMD would set up a Fully Vetted RSS feed, I would gladly use that instead...

Tip on Nulo
by happypetmom on 08/30/2010 11:17am

Thank you for the tip, Tish! I don't even use pet dishes made in China! Their record of poisoning their own people, infants included shows a total disregard for humans. Surely they don't care about our fur babies! I figure they lick their dishes every day, so we've abandoned all the adorable pet shop bowls and use all pyrex, corelle, or other glass dishes made in USA for our cats and dogs (and us of course!)

Like New Layout
by LorieAHuston on 08/30/2010 12:37pm

Hi, Dr. Khuly.

I love your new layout. I haven't had time yet to check out your new videos, but I definitely intend to do so as soon as I get the chance. I think weight management is such a big deal for our pets and I'm glad to see Nulo providing some guidance on that. So many of the pets that I see in my practice are overweight and their owners don't even realize it. They tend to be shocked when I show them the body condition chart and point to where their dog or cat's weight is on the chart.

Sorry you had such a bad week. Hopefully, this week will be better for you :-)

As a Kiwi I feel compelled to mention that the entity "poisoning" Chinese baby formula was actually a New Zealand owned and ostensibly controlled company. Funny how no one remembers that. It doesn't fit the stereotypes perhaps?

thanks for sharing
by BarbaraA on 08/30/2010 03:37pm

I thought I was the only one with weeks like that (of course not!). I moved a mile down the road after two lightning strikes that fried appliances, TV, garage door openers only to have trees pull out wires causing power surges with the same results!

I'm used to sweating without truck AC and freezing without heat in the winter---so anything is ok by me in my OWN car.

So I thought my week was going well after we had 100 trees "surgically removed" to prevent more loss and mess, but woke up Sunday to my first case of "old dog vestibular syndrome"
Scary, scary!

I did better coping with IVDD , although the dog didn't!
Hope Vincent is well on the mend, can't imagine 2 cats & myelogram! No MRI down there?

by CP on 08/30/2010 03:37pm

So sorry to hear of that lousy week. Don't know if it's a blessing or a curse to have all that misery happen so close together. Very happy Vincent is doing better.

Have a better week.

More cats!
by wendy christensen on 08/30/2010 04:19pm

I'm a happy reader of Fully Vetted, and Doolittler before that. I've quoted Dr. Khuly several times in my biweekly pet column, "Creature Comforts," here in the Monadnock region of southern New Hampshire.

Yes, you DO need more cat articles on Fully Vetted!! Every little bit helps to raise the status of ALL cats, keeps cats in their homes and and saves cat's lives

I'm the author of a well-regarded, practical cat book called "Outwitting Cats" (The Lyons press, 2005). It has been praised by many vets, and some even provide it to their cat-owning clients. Perhaps Dr. Khuly would like a copy? Readers of Fully Vetted who are cat owners might like to check it out, too -- I live with ten cats and they've taught me a LOT!

Titers
by Dr. Patty Khuly on 08/30/2010 05:59pm

I'm confused, but perhaps that's because your comment has to do with a months-ago post and I sometimes get fuzzy even after just a few hours. ;-)

I do believe, however, that yours is a point I distinctly addressed. Yes, of course there's a difference between the two and more of a correlation between cell and humoral immunity for some vaccines/organisms than for others.

Hence, we are in complete agreement. Sorry if I was in any way unclear. I do appreciate any opportunity to clarify––especially on the murky issue of titering.

Here's the post for anyone who missed it or wants to brush up:

Nulo Vitamins
by Dr. Patty Khuly on 08/31/2010 06:17am

I took the liberty of contacting Nulo's CEO, Michael Landa, directly, as this is an issue that I agree is important to discuss. Plenty of us are skeptical of overseas ingredients these days and we want to be sure the supply chain is as well-controlled as possible. I was especially concerned since I specifically agreed to work with Nulo because, among other categories of due diligence, I looked into their ingredients carefully and had found no fault.

Thankfully, Michael assured me that every single ingredient––vitamins included––are domestic except the New Zealand-sourced lamb. He went so far as to pull up the telephone transcript of the conversation in which a flustered employee did not give Tish the right info. I was told, "he will no longer be making that mistake."

So how about that for responsiveness? Not bad.

Nulo Vitamins
by tish on 08/31/2010 09:15am

I'm glad you got in touch with the CEO of Nulo. I had two "live chats" with two different reps. The first was on 8/13 and the second on 8/16. Both of the reps told me the vitamins and minerals were from Europe and the Pacific Rim. The first rep promised to email me information regarding the Pacific Rim ingredients. I never received that email--which promoted my second "live chat". I'm glad that Mr. Landa will be giving the correct information to his company represtentatives.

by EmilyPK on 08/31/2010 10:53am

New Zealand is, of course, a Pacific Rim country--as is the US. It isn't really a very specific term.

Nulo
by FLRatTerriers on 08/31/2010 11:04pm

Dr. Khuly, Thanks so much for following up with Nulo regarding the origin of their ingredients. I has perused their website for this information and was unable to locate it. In lieu of recent cases of contaminated pet food, pet food recalls, etc it is definitely something that myself and many others are concerned about. Hopefully, Nulo will consider posting this somewhere on their website where it is easily located. Thanks again!

Dr. Khuly, I really like the Behind the Bag video, although it may be too simple for Gia, I have several friends I need to email that to!
