Pet shopping, Black Friday and YOU

November 27, 2009 / (8) comments

Turns out that 52% of pet owning Americans plan on buying their pets a present this year. According to the Associated Press poll that brought this news to a publication near you, that’s up from 43% last year.

Conclusion: Pets are beloved and becoming more traditionally so if their ability to rake in the holiday swag is any measure.

Which has elicited some impressive media responses to the concept of pet spending. As in (yawn!) the tired old argument that we waste our money on our animals when we could be spending it on...oh, I don’t know...Christmas cards?

Meanwhile, this notion is no shocker for those of us who spend big bucks on animal healthcare and invest our energy reading blogs that more than half our fellow pet owners consider animals holiday gift-worthy.

Though the media might make much of it, it’s no surprise to us. Even less so when you consider there’s nothing too rational about the human drive to offer gifts to our loved ones in the first place.

Indeed, when directed towards animals, buying behavior is a reflection of our least selfish, most nurturing impulses. That’s especially obvious when we consider that pets are the recipients who least expect or demand the gifts we bestow upon them.

So ignore the obnoxious catcalls of those who would question your human loyalty or suggest you’ve abandoned all reason when you head out to the mall or shop the internet for your pet’s next holiday indulgence. Keep in mind that almost nothing beats this gesture for its honesty and purity or spirit. And that’s what this season is all about, right?

'Sorry, Dr. K., I clicked him away as a spammer before I saw your post (I'm still a bit drowsy with cold medicine).  'Hope you aren't mad.

Sorry, Kevin, but here on Dolittler we do not advocate shocking our neighbors' dogs by way of living more comfortably.

My cats have always had their very own stocking.  They've been good kitties this year, so Santa will probably leave them a few catnip toys.  My husband likes to tell them that if they don't behave, they'll find a stocking full of dog biscuits.  But the "Santa's watching" threat is even more useless on cats than it is on children.

The girls received their big present early, a Drinkwell fountain that seems to have increased their water intake considerably.  They'll get some small toys too.  So far this season, the best loved "toy" is a  wine cork from last evening.  Kitten Rescue will get some $ and the L.A. Children's hospital will get goodies from us via a toys & such matching campaign at work.

Well, there's nothing like the look on Sophia's or Cole's faces when I toss them an empty plastic soda bottle.

Or any of them, when I turn them out into the yard with a fresh cow pelvis from the slaughterhouse (also free, but how much do you have to love the dog to go digging in the bone barrels behind the abbotoire?)

Unlike kids, they never outgrow the stage where the box is better than the contents.

I love my critters to death, but I will not venture out on Black Friday for them. :)

That being said, they'll have their own stockings and goodies and definitely be a part of our belated Christmas celebration.  (We have to spend the 25th with cranky relatives.  I'd much rather spend it with the awesomedog and wonderkittens.)

I also get them little presents throughout the year.  There is nothing like the look on my dog's face when I pull a new Dingo bone out of a shopping bag.  "Really?  For me??!"

I also make $$ and supply donations to the shelter and rescues throughout the year, so other little critters can be taken care of, too.

They bring me so much joy, I can't imagine not at least trying to return the favor with some mousie toys and rawhides.

I've done (before Thanksgiving and that's a first, ever for me) my holiday shopping for my critters already!  We're kinda flush with "stuff" here so I was more conservative than in past years - want to ensure I have money for medical, emergencies, etc. if it comes up while the economy is still...  I need to make another donation to the Rabies Challenge Fund by end of year and I've already made some donations to Rescue.  There are great shelters and rescue groups out there and they're all in need.  Please, please check out your charities and make sure your money goes to the right folks and for what you really want to support.

The best gift would be a donation to an animal shelter in your pets name so another animal can enjoy the love and care that your pet is receiving.
