Pet Sites You Love...

JAN 28, 2010

Inquiring minds want to know … which are your favorite pet-related websites?

A good friend has charged me with the task of finding the best pet sites on the Internet. He seems to think that my blogging presence makes me some kind of Web-content guru.

I wish it were true, but sadly, that's just not possible. Not when you consider that I spend the bulk of my time either writing these posts or reading the comments that follow. After that, who’s got time to play online after hours? A girl’s gotta work, cook, clean, feed, read, knit and exercise, right?

So it’s up to you. I want to know where you smart people shop and buy your pet meds. Nosey me wants to know which blog rocks your world and what pet site finds you coming back for more, day after day. Is it buck-naked information that gets you going? Is it the community feel that grabs you? Or perhaps it's the personal touch that works for you?

Please, please, please let me know — for my own edification as well as my solicitous friend’s.

Pet Supplies and donation site
by Kathy Miller on 01/28/2010 05:34am

I use www.jefferspet.com for most of my pet needs - they are least expensive and carry all the same items ans most other pet supply places. I also use wwwdrfostersmith.com but they are a tad more expensive but they do carry some things Jeffers does not. As for donations - go to www.onecause.com and sign up and with each purchase from your favorite store a donation is made to your favorite charity. Also signing up for the rescue sigtht and clicking everyday will donate food to rescue's all around the world.

I buy all my pet meds at the vet's office. I feel it is safer that way. I do have one of the meds compounded by an outside source, but it was referred to me by my vet.

As far as websites....you can't go wrong with

icanhascheezburger.com
ihasahotdog.com
cuteoverload.com
and
dailysquee.com

Prepare to say "awwwwww" A LOT!

Pet Websites
by Tammy Cobb/Fetch! Pet Care of Virginia Beach/Chesapeake on 01/28/2010 07:45am

We have a local pet supply store here in Virginia Beach called Care-A-Lot Pet Supply. They usually have much lower prices than the chain stores. They also have a fun catalog of stuff and a website: http://www.carealotpets.com/. I always check prices there before I buy anything. If you see something in the catalog and not on the floor of the store, they will get it out of the warehouse for you.

As far as products we use KV VET. Prices are low and
and usually you do not pay shipping. Also if I have questions the vets are really helpful to help with any question themself. Great experience. I wil check what other people comment in here to compare.

I have followed Carol Hine's blog of S.A.I.N.T.s rescue in Mission, BC for over a year now. She is an amazing woman with an amazing rescue. That's the first thing I do when I get to work everyday is check out SAINTS to see what has happened during the night. She tells it like it is in rescue - the good, the bad and the ugly.

Itchmoforums.com has been the one to go to since March 2007 - it is where I found many petowners in my shoes--with melamine poisoned cats--ever since joining this site has been a source of support, current pet news with recall info as well as "how to make a difference" ideas and just a place to go and chat about our 4 legged friends..Pet Connection and the golden retriever forum are my next fav's...

itchmoforums.com

The pet parents at Itchmo have had a lot of experience with foods, toys, injuries and sicknesses. I wouldn't buy any new product without checking here first, and if I ever have any questions or worries about my 5 kitties, I always get answers I can trust. Hands down this is the most valuable pet site I've ever seen.

Itchmoforums is my favorite pet website. I also check it out daily, multiple times a day if I have a chance. It is extremely informative about pet food experiences and ongoing challenges brought on by the PFI. The members there also share a great wealth of information regarding all pet related issues.

These are all great sites for pet information, support and just generally hanging out with other "animal people"! The Best Friends forums are more topic-specific, but also a good place to go.

Some pet-oriented sites I like
by LBD on 02/02/2010 09:47am

There are many good sources of pet information and caretaker support on the Internet. Limiting yourself to just one can easily lead to falling into the "Groupthink" trap.

Here are a few I like:

dolittler.com (Of course!)
news.vin.com/VINNews.aspx?catId=0 (Even though I'm not a veterinarian, I love their dedication to scientific truth and what is truly best for our pets, rather than catering to corporate or institutional interests.)
twobitdog.com/DrFox/index.aspx (Again a valuable balance to corporate/institutional interests.)
marvistavet.org/html/the_pet_web_library.html
bedlamfarm.com/blog/ (Thoughtful and great photography)
wayofcats.com/blog/ (A true cat lover and advocate.)
cats.about.com/b/ (Franny rocks!)

For keeping up with petfood issues, (and other ground they cover), I love these two sites:
truthaboutpetfood.com
dogaware.com

Some pet forums I like are chazhound.com, dogfoodchat.com, and forloveofthem.com Franny mentioned above has a wonderful cat forum.

A rule of thumb I have learned for evaluating forums is: Does the moderating staff or a dominant group on the forum fear-monger about raw food? If they do, a red flag goes up for me that the site may be PFI financed or heavily infiltrated and I am out of there.
Whatever the motive, I'm put off by people bashing a food choice that kept my pet safe during the 2007 recall.

Commercial sites that I like are:
wellvet.com
healthypets.com
askariel.com

by Sarah Shoemaker on 02/04/2010 08:52pm

I buy my meds from a vet clinic. I even buy some of my dog food from the vet clinic. That is for my special needs pets. I spend more money this way and it hurts sometimes. Why do I do this? They give me support I can find no where else and support and loyalty is a two way street. I like your blog.

43
by Linda on 02/27/2010 11:45am

LBD, this comment you made is so true:
"A rule of thumb I have learned for evaluating forums is: Does the moderating staff or a dominant group on the forum fear-monger about raw food? If they do, a red flag goes up for me that the site may be PFI financed or heavily infiltrated and I am out of there." This is why I quit my membership at Itchmoforums.com.

44
by Jerry on 03/02/2010 05:53am

I agree, Linda. Look at the nonsensical Wiki smear job on commercial raw food done there by a member before being promoted to moderator.

itchmoforums.com/off-topic-no-politics/raw-for-your-pets-try-some-for-yourself-t3463.0.html

Also I saw that one of the members of their inner circle describe a personal injury lawyer and big business consultant as a "food safety activist." I do not buy that one at all.

I like:
dogaware.com
cats.about.com/b/
forloveofthem.com

Those sites are consumer oriented.

A pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal, as opposed to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for economic reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, or for their song. Pets also generally seem to provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits; keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around. There is now a medically-approved class of therapy animals, mostly dogs, that are brought to visit confined humans. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.
I am a student of ccna and i am so much specialties in the network solution's.
