Kids and Pets: Is Bed Sharing Safe?

February 04, 2010 / (14) comments

One of my clients recently asked me to help settle a family dispute. His mother-in-law claimed the family's pets would spread diseases to the children if they slept on their beds. He called it an old wives’ tale, but he wanted my take, of course.

So here it is: It’s been reported that up to 79% of pet owners allow pets to share beds with their human family members. Despite the popularity of the practice, physician and veterinary groups have taken turns speaking out against human-pet bed sharing for a variety of reasons. But don't worry: none of them involve the dreaded Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) — much less any sort of suffocation (above picture notwithstanding).

In the case of some physician groups, the warnings are human health-based. Confirmed transmission of MRSA skin infections and H1N1 influenza, for example, gives fodder to the speculation that humans who share the covers with their furred family members are more likely to become ill.

While this is certainly more of a possibility with immunosuppressed humans (HIV-positive, transplant recipients or chemotherapy patients, for example), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer no explicit warnings on this issue beyond the standard warnings for these immunocompromised groups of people.

In fact, when it comes to infectious disease transmission, physicians and veterinarians agree there is scant evidence that healthy, well cared-for pets are detrimental to human health under these circumstances. Indeed, human family members are much more likely to transmit diseases during bed-sharing than our pets are.

Though infectious disease transmission may be rare between healthy humans and pets who sleep in the same bed, veterinarians don’t always agree that allowing dogs to sleep on human beds is a good thing, behaviorally speaking.

Puppies predisposed to dominance or aggression may develop these behaviors when allowed to sleep with humans. Housebreaking may also be affected if beds take the place of crates, for example. That’s why bed-sharing should always be delayed until training is complete and social maturity is achieved, behaviorists suggest.

Housetraining and temperament issues aside, some pets are actually better off not sleeping with humans due to their own health issues. This is most important for older pets or for breeds predisposed to jumping injuries or back troubles.

It’s also argued, however, that pets confer significant psychological and personal safety benefits when they sleep with their human family members. Some sleep studies even show that pets can help insomniacs sleep more deeply.

I’m not sure I helped out with the dispute, but in this case I think I at least managed to distribute lots of ammunition widely. Now it’s up to them to make of it what they will.

So how about you? What's your take? Do your pets sleep in your kids' beds? In yours?

Pets in the bed

I know all the trainers don't believe in pets sleeping in the bed with you but sorry, all 8 of mine sleep with me and they all have their favorite spots. In fact, I'm due for a new mattress so I think I might just get myself a Queen size this time. lol

Pets sharing our beds

We let our little Boston Terrier sleep in our bed, but he has a blanket that he sleeps on at our feet. Every now and then we sill slither his way between my husband and I for warmth, but as soon as one of us wakes up all we have to do is point to his blanket and he will go lay on it. He is an indoor dog and seems pretty clean… Maybe I am just being naive?!

Not sure if it is a good idea to let the pup share the bed when you are a newlywed!?

Bed sharing wih pets

I allow my chihuahua to sleep with me, we both keep each other warm on long winter nights! She did sleep in her own bed when she was a puppy and not house trained yet. Also, we have a pit that sleeps with my 17-yr old grand son. He is just a big baby that does not like to sleep alone (the pit!)

Bed Sharing with Pets

We let our dogs sleep on the bed, even as puppies. They never soiled the bed and we carried them outside for that first potty break of the day. (of course they were crate trained as well, just not overnight.) That being said, I have contracted Lyme Disease twice. I don't know whether the ticks got on me during our walks or while sleeping, but Lyme is definitely a risk if you let your dogs on the bed.

My family's cats have always been kings of the castle; they choose where they sleep without asking us first :) That said, most of them sleep at our feet, with a few rare exceptions taking over pillows or snuggling the in the crook of an elbow or knee.

The dogs have always been relegated to dog beds or blankets on the floor near the bed, due to the above takeovers by the cats. Only my brother has ever had enough room in his bed for a specific dog, and she's too old to jump up anymore.

So, any suggestions on how to get me and my dog out of the habbit of 'sharing beds'?

Sometimes he will sleep on the couch for the beginning of the night but a couple hours into sleep, he always ends up on the bed. It seems that when he gets cold he comes up to cuddle, but he has all the blankets/dog pillows in the world to keep warm!

Dogs sleeping with you

I sleep so much better when my dog,Gracie,is in bed with me.She only gets under the covers when she's really cold.Other than those rare times, she sleeps at the foot of the bed and in the summer, she has her own "over-stuffed"chair out in the living room.Gracie would rather sleep by herself.lol.I have to practically beg her to sleep on my bed.Having her near me makes me feel safe.

Sharing your bed with pets
by Leslie Ray on 02/04/2010 07:25pm

In addition to the warnings listed here, I believe it should be noted that another possible threat is that of contracting Lyme Disease or other tick-borne diseases. Even if you regularly treat your pets for parasites, if they spend time outside, they can pick up ticks. Should a tick drop off your pet and attach itself to you, there is a risk that you could contract Lyme, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, or other tick-borne diseases. Having met individuals with Lyme, I can assure you it is not a disease to be taken lightly. While we love our pets dearly, we do not allow them to sleep with us for this reason.

pets in bed
by canada3dayer on 02/05/2010 09:27pm

I regularly wake up with my 3 cats (each one about 15 lbs! but they're big, solid cats, not flabby) nestled around my legs and sides, usually so close that I'm hemmed in and can't move! when he was younger, my Siberian used to sometimes get on the bed too, but since he likes to sleep across the bed rather than lengthwise, I discouraged that so that I'd have some room instead of hanging off the edge of the bed...

...Why stop there? Splurge for a king!

Just to be clear: I'm not advocating a no pets in bed rule. Mine, in fact, sleep with me. But I'm picky about who I let up given that it can cause strife if I don't select the right one. It's a complex bit of calculus, this process, but it tends to apply only if you've got a dog with aggression issues (as I have).

bed sharing
by marcha on 02/07/2010 08:58pm

I share my bed with my pets. It hasn't always been this way. I prefer the sharing. I have not had any behavior problems with my pets because of this, I believe this is because I make sure they understand it is still mt domain.

as long as i can remember ( a long time) i have always had cats and dogs and they have always slept on the bed. usually above my head except for one dog that insisted on getting between us under the covers. she stretched out more than the kids did, who also slept with us. thats why they make king size beds !
