A. You didn't mention your cat's age in your profile, but I'll see if I can help. Cats do get viral upper respiratory disease, and it's often self-limiting and resolves in a few days on its own. Herpes virus is a very common infection in cats (some people estimate as many as 80% of cats in the U.S. Are positive for it) and just like herpes in people, it seems to cause problems when they're under stress.
If the discharge is clear, it's likely viral. You can feed a canned diet (more smell = more appetite) and put him in the bathroom with you when you shower or run a humidifier to increase moisture in the air and soothe his nasal passages. It's also safe to use a small amount of children's saline nose drops around the nasal openings to help breathing. Please remember though - if he's not feeling well, not eating, and definitely if the discharge is cloudy or yellow or green, it's likely NOT a simple viral infection and he needs veterinary care ASAP.
