Q. My dog had a tumor removed and the biopsy came back "Moderately differentiated basal cell carcinoma". What does this mean and what is the prognosis?
DR. CHRISTIE LONG, D.V.M., C.V.A.
A. Great answer below. With complete excision basal cell tumors are usually cured, however please ask your vet to confirm that the mass was removed with complete "margins", meaning there was no tumor left behind.
A. This means that your dog's biopsy was positive for a malignant type of skin cancer. The prognosis is good and often cured once the tumor is completely removed.
