Q. Our cat has enlarged kidneys. Antibiotics worked for awhile. He seems to be getting sick again. He tested negative for leukemia and feline aids.

A. At 1 year old I would be very anxious to find the cause of the kidney enlargement. Maybe you already know this, but kidney enlargement isn't a disease on it's own - it's a sign of a disease. If FeLV and FIV have been ruled out I would recommend an ultrasound to actually visualize the kidneys and see if a cause for the enlargement can be determined. I'd be very worried about feline infectious peritonitis in this cat. It can be very difficult to diagnose, and if it's not on your vet's radar screen it should be.

Unfortunately this is a very concerning sign (the enlarged kidneys and returning illness) in a very young cat. FIP as well as congenital (present from birth) problems would be at the top of my list. If you want to consult more about exactly what's been going on with him I'm available.
