DR. CHRISTIE LONG, D.V.M., C.V.A.
A. Great answer below. I'll also add that there are many approaches to treating arthritis pain. Angel is correct - there are excellent anti-inflammatories for dogs that are safe and effective in controlling arthritis pain. You should also talk to your vet about using products such as supplements - like fish oils and glucosamine/chondrotin supplements, as well as injectable products like Adequan. Acupuncture can help as well, along with weight loss (if necessary) and physical therapy. Don't give up - there are many ways you can help your dog feel more comfortable.
A. Do not give any medications to your pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Have her examined by your vet then discuss appropriate pain management.
