Q. To know if your golden retriever was borned with an immune compromised system, igg, iga, or igm immunoglobulins can tell you that answer.
DR. CHRISTIE LONG, D.V.M., C.V.A.
A. Immunodeficiency syndromes are fairly rare in dogs, however they do happen. Routine blood work may give some clues, such as persistently low numbers of specific white blood cells (lymphocytes). There are some very specific tests that can be done depending on the type of immunodeficiency syndrome your vet suspects - it's not a simple answer, and I would suggest that if your vet isn't sure how to proceed at this point, he or she might call one of the veterinary testing laboratories such as Antech or Idexx and request a consultation with one of the clinical pathologists, who can help them identify the best path to proceed to a diagnosis.
