Q. What's good for a pitbull with allergies(itching? Had to vet was on steroids and that helped. Takes Zyrtec and Benedryl. No more steroids and itchy.
DR. CHRISTIE LONG, D.V.M., C.V.A.
A. I'd add to Angel's answer below (which is excellent information) that there are some remarkable drugs available now with almost no side effects (unlike steroids). Talk to your vet about Atopica and Apoquel. I've had great success using both of these drugs to treat the itchiness associated with allergies. Often antihistamines (like Zyrtec and Benedryl) aren't enough to control itchiness.
A. Consider adding a fish oil supplement to the diet. Search www.pet360.com for essential fatty acid supplements. Discuss allergy testing, food elimination trials and hydrolyzed diets with your vet or veterinary dermatologist. Allergies can be very frustrating to diagnose since they have many causes (food, contact, inhalant, flea bites). Your task is to determine what your dog is allergic to, then decrease or eliminate it if possible.
