Q. My bullmastiff delivered seven puppies since then she has had four that were dead what do I do to insure she does not die
DR. CHRISTIE LONG, D.V.M., C.V.A.
A. I would recommend a check with your vet to ensure that there are no more dead puppies in her uterus. Sometimes this occurs, and labor stops even though there are still puppies to be delivered. An x-ray can confirm that the uterus is or is not empty at this point. Then as Dr. Elbeze below recommends, she should be spayed once the puppies have been weaned, since there may be a problem that's caused her to have so many non-viable puppies.
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS
A. If you are referring to the mother, make sure you feed her high quality puppy food the whole time she is nursing the puppies.
Regarding the puppies, if they don't seem to be eating enough, buy some puppy milk replacer and bottle feed them every few hours.
When she finished nursing I recommend waiting a month and then have her spayed as she may have a uterine condition.
