Q. My maltese has loose stools yesterday and today his bum is all red and swollen, what can I do to help him?
DR. CHRISTIE LONG, D.V.M., C.V.A.
A. When there's been severe diarrhea often the perineum (the area around the anus) needs to be clipped of hair, washed, and have a soothing topical antibacterial ointment used. I don't recommend zinc-containing ointments that are commonly used for diaper rash in babies, as these can be toxic if licked off by the dog. You vet can prescribe a topical medication and also help with the cleanup, as well as help you find and treat the cause of the diarrhea, it it's still present.
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS
A. The loose stools might have caused the swollen bum, He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating well, continue with this diet for 2 days.
After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food.
If he continues having loose stools, take him to the vet to get treatment.
