Q. I have a 100lb half lab half ridge back that is 1.5 yrs and very athletic. When should I introduce joint supplements to prevent arthritis?
A. This is a bit of a personal choice. I don't see any reason why you couldn't start now, low dose, maintenance type doseage. Later on you may need to adjust the dose accordingly. Some supplements also have MSM, HA, and other additives but these types are more the "heavy hitters" and I would save these until you NEED them. You want to start low on the scale so you have stronger products to move up the scale, later on in life as your dog gets to a point where he needs more joint support. Right now you also help out by ensuring feeding a good quality food, monitoring his weight and keeping him active without over doing it.
A. Fish oils and glucosamine supplements can be started as soon as possible to prevent joint inflammation and to provide support. There are numerous products on the market and I would discuss which one may be best with your veterinarian.
