Q. Can a dog's diet be the cause of bloody vaginal discharge. She's a small Maltese / poodle
DR. JENNIFER LADD, DVM
A. Short answer is no. Long answer would lead me to inquire if she has had her first heat yet. I always recommend spaying a dog before their first heat as it reduces their risk for mammary cancer and pyometras later in life. If you elect not to spay her just realize that these risks exist as she matures. In the meantime she will go in to heat regurally and have bloody discharge and possible behavioral changes encouraging her to mate. I am available online if you would like to consult in more detail. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have .
