Q. How much of a cranberry capsule should I give my male Maine coon with a UTI?
DR. JENNIFER LADD, DVM
A. I would start with 1/4 twice daily. As a big supporter of holistic medicine I am glad to hear this product being used. I do want to warn you though that urinary problems in cats, especially males, are usually related to urinary crystal formation , not bacterial infections. When using natural remedies such as this, I would first recommend a urinalysis. If there are urinary crystals, there are diets to help dissolve them, or I often prescribe a Chinese veterinary herb called crystal stone formula. Sometimes k will use both together. If there is bacteria present, you can try the cranberry, but usually I find it works better if I do a very short course of an antibiotic, concurrent with probiotics and cranberry, and then maintain the cat on the cranberry for 1-3 months to prevent recurrence. Sometimes herbs or natural therapies are like using a squirt gun to put out a house fire. I find the greatest success in modifying traditional treatments, so that holistic remedies can work to their full potential to balance the body.
