Q. 3 yrs old pit bull has an ear infection vet has'nt been able to clear up. Next she may need a surgery that could leave her deaf. What else can be done
DR. JENNIFER LADD, DVM
A. Although an ear ablation will solve the problem, I like to try all medical options first. I use Otibiotic in the ear twice a day for a week then once a week for a month. No cleaning or any other products in the ear. If that does not clear it up alone I next add in an oral anti fungal as most ear infections are yeast in origin. Your dog should be checked for healthy kidney enzymes prior to use and monitored closely while on them. Sometimes I have to treat for up to a month. If you try all of this with no success I would be suspicious of a deeply lodged foreign body, or if clear I would recommend the ablation. Some dogs just have poor anatomy.
