Q. My cat has lost weight, and he is drinking more and urinating frequently. So far, hyperthyroidism, diabetes and UTI have been ruled out. Any thoughts?
DR. LEIGH PUSATERI, DVM
A. Other things that can cause increased water intake and urinations in cats are kidney disease, hypercalcemia, cancer (lymphoma). It would be helpful to know the urine specific gravity. If all bloodwork is normal than I would recommend xrays of the abdomen and chest, and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. If nothing is found, then repeat the thyroid test in a month.
