Q. I have a puppy mill dog who has been bred for 8 yrs. She has lumps on and near her teets from overbreeding..could it be cancer or is this normal?
AMY S. EUTSEY, DVM
A. This is not normal. It may be mammary cancer or benign, non-cancerous growths or cysts. I would recommend that you have a vet examine her. A sterile needle aspirate can be done to get a sample of the cells in the mass to get a better idea if it is cancer or not. It is often recommended to surgically remove these masses and spay her at the same time. Your vet may recommend bloodwork and a chest x-Ray first.
