Q. I have a 12 yr old Australian Shepherd who is throwing up what she eats whole, but it could be several hours after she eats. Can drink water fine
DR. MASSIMO ORIOLES, DVM, MRCVS
A. These signs may be secondary to several causes of gastroenteritis (chronic inflammation/infections of stomach-intestines, complete of partial obstructions, pancreatitis and many others). Considering the age, more sinister causes such as tumors must be considered.
If the food is not digested at all, it could be that she is actually regurgitating and not vomiting. Regurgitation can have different origin and usually the food does not even reach the stomach. This is less likely given that she could vomit/regurgitating several hours after she eats.
I would strongly recommend to take her to your veterinarian for a quick check up and establish what is the most likely cause of these vomiting episodes and treat her adequately.
She may need x rays of the abdomen/thorax.
