Q. What would cause my cat to lose weight, while all the while he eats a great deal?
DR. MASSIMO ORIOLES, DVM, MRCVS
A. There are several causes of weight loss despite normal/increase appetite.
Hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal disease such as gastrointestinal tumors and inflammatory disease, chronic renal failure are the most common ones.
Blood test and urine analysis could rule out or confirm most of them, whereas gastrointestinal disorders may need imaging procedures (radiographs, ultrasound) to be diagnosed.
