Q. Could rabies shot cause our miniture dachshund break out in large pink welts within a few days of shot-1st time multiple vaccines-2nd time rabies only

Answered By
DR. MASSIMO ORIOLES, DVM, MRCVS

A. It could cause a local reaction on the skin (on the site of injection) which can look like a lump/bump. Pain, redness, and irritation can occur at the injection site as well. These effects generally occur within 30 minutes to 1 week of the vaccination. If the signs persist, or are severe, contact your veterinarian.

Occasionally, abscesses can form at the injection site. These abscesses are generally not caused by infection, but by the body's over-reaction to the vaccine.

A. It's definitely possible although vaccine reactions usually start the same day. If it's really bad I would advice going to the vet to get an antihistamine injection and some tablets to take home as well.
