Q. My cat has bad breath and gingivitis. Will a systemic antibiotic help? What antibiotic gel is available?
DR. MASSIMO ORIOLES, DVM, MRCVS
A. A systemic antibiotic may help to decrease the bacterial overgrown and infection in the mouth combined with an antiseptic mouth gel. Oral gel usually have chlorhexidine and often zinc inside ( there is a variety of commercial product on the market).
Often teeth descale and polish and eventually teeth extractions ( followed by regular teeth cleaning) is the most helpful and resolutive treatment for dental disease associated with tartar and gingivitis.
If, despite the antibiotics, the gingivitis persist I would recommend to have him checked by your veterinarian as gingivitis and stomatitis in cats may require a different approach in terms of treatment.
